Schools Shut Amid Kerala's Heavy Rainfall

Kerala confronts intense monsoon rains, leading to a red alert in North Kerala. Schools are closed for safety, and tourism is halted in affected districts as authorities take measures to mitigate impacts.

As Kerala grapples with intense monsoon rains, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) hased extremely heavy rainfall for North Kerala. A red alert has been issued for Malappuram Kannur, and Kasaragod districts for Monday. This alert signifies that these areas could receive over 20 cm of rain within 24 hours.

Weather Alerts and Precautions

The IMD has also placed Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Kozhikode, and Wayanad districts under an orange alert. This indicates that these regions can expect very heavy rainfall ranging from 11 cm to 20 cm. Additionally, a yellow alert is in place for areas anticipating heavy rainfall between 6 cm and 11 cm.

Due to the continuous downpour, district authorities in Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasaragod have declared a holiday for all educational institutions on Monday. This precautionary measure aims to ensure the safety of students and staff amidst the adverse weather conditions.

Impact on Tourism and Infrastructure

In Kasaragod district, all tourism activities have been halted following the severe weather forecast. Authorities are taking these steps to prevent any mishaps due to the expected extreme weather conditions.

The heavy rains have already caused significant damage across various parts of the state. Reports indicate partial damage to houses and minor landslides in several locations. The strong winds accompanying the rains have also led to uprooted trees, further disrupting daily life.

The IMD's alerts serve as a crucial warning for residents in affected areas to take necessary precautions. With schools and colleges closed in six districts and tourism activities suspended in Kasaragod, authorities are prioritising public safety during this period of intense rainfall.

Residents are advised to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel until the weather conditions improve. The state government continues to monitor the situation closely and provide updates as needed.
