The Karnataka Department of School Education and Literacy has abolished the late admission penalty fees for students seeking admission to government Pre-University (PU) colleges from the 2026-27 academic session. The decision comes after the department found that the penalty provision was being misused by some institutions to regularise delayed admissions without obtaining the required approvals.

With the latest order, students taking late admission to First PUC and Second PUC courses in government PU colleges across Karnataka will no longer have to pay the previously prescribed penalty charges.
Until now, students admitted after the official admission deadline were required to pay additional charges based on the delay:
Admission within 10 days after the deadline: ₹670 late admission fee.
Admission within 20 days after the deadline: ₹2,220 special penalty fee.
These charges were introduced through a government order issued on May 20, 2018. However, the department observed that some colleges were using the provision to regularise admissions made beyond the prescribed timeline without seeking approval from higher authorities.
To prevent such practices and ensure greater transparency in the admission process, the government has now withdrawn the penalty fee system.
In an official announcement shared on X (formerly Twitter), the Department of School Education and Literacy confirmed that the earlier order imposing late admission fines has been revoked.
The department stated that from the 2026-27 academic year onwards, students taking delayed admissions to First PUC and Second PUC in all government pre-university colleges across the state will be completely exempt from paying the ₹670 and ₹2,220 penalty charges.
The move is expected to provide financial relief to students and families while ensuring that genuine candidates are not burdened with additional fees because of delayed admissions.
While removing the penalty fees, the department has instructed all government PU colleges to strictly adhere to the official academic calendar and admission schedule.
College authorities have been directed to complete admissions within the prescribed timeline and avoid any deviations from the approved schedule. The department has emphasized that admissions beyond the deadline should be handled in accordance with the prescribed rules and administrative procedures.
The latest decision reflects the Karnataka government's efforts to improve transparency in the admission process, prevent misuse of regulations, and make access to pre-university education more student-friendly. Students seeking admission to government PU colleges can now complete delayed admissions without the burden of additional penalty fees from the 2026-27 academic session onward.
