The Karnataka government has announced a 10% fee hike for engineering courses in private colleges for the academic year 2024-25. This decision follows extensive discussions between the state government and private educational institutions.

Private colleges in Karnataka will now charge higher fees, impacting approximately 1,40,621 students enrolled in engineering courses. The total number of students affected by this increase across various disciplines is expected to reach 11,88,161.
In the previous academic year, the fee structure was already a concern for many students and parents. With this new hike, the financial burden on families is likely to grow further. The average fee per student is anticipated to rise significantly, making higher education less accessible for some.
During the 2021-22 academic year, private engineering colleges had already implemented a fee increase. This trend of annual hikes has been consistent over the past few years, raising concerns about the affordability and accessibility of quality education. The fee hike varies between 15-20% depending on the institution and course. For instance, last year's average fee per student was Rs. 1,28,746, which has now increased to Rs. 1,40,621. This continuous rise in fees poses significant challenges for students from economically weaker sections.
The government has justified this increase by citing rising operational costs faced by educational institutions. However, they have also acknowledged that this decision might create financial strain for many families.
"We understand the concerns of students and parents," said an official from the Education Department. "But increasing costs necessitate such measures to maintain quality education standards."
Despite understanding the need for fee hikes due to inflation and other factors, there are growing concerns about how these increases affect accessibility to higher education. Many believe that continuous fee hikes could deter talented students from pursuing engineering courses due to financial constraints. The government has urged private colleges to be cautious with future hikes to ensure that education remains accessible to all sections of society. They are also exploring ways to provide more scholarships and financial aid to deserving students.
As Karnataka navigates these changes in its educational landscape, it remains crucial for both government and private institutions to find a balance between maintaining quality education and ensuring affordability for all students.
