The Puducherry and Karaikal regions are experiencing intense rainfall due to weather systems forming over the Bay of Bengal, prompting the local administration to announce the closure of schools for the day. This decision comes after the IMD issued a heavy to very heavy rainfall alert, warning that the region may face waterlogging, strong winds, and possible disruptions in daily activities.

According to the official announcement, all schools from Classes LKG to Class 12-including government, government-aided, and private institutions-will remain closed. The unexpected rainfall in the Union Territory has resulted in rising water levels in several areas, prompting authorities to prioritise student safety. The administration stated that the holiday has been declared as a preventive measure to avoid any risk to schoolchildren, especially considering the poor road conditions and potential flooding in vulnerable pockets.
Over the past 24 hours, Puducherry and Karaikal have witnessed intermittent but intense showers, causing water stagnation in many urban and rural areas. Public works and municipal teams have been deployed to monitor drainage systems, clear clogged waterways, and respond to emergency situations. Parents have been advised to stay alert and follow updates from the district administration regarding weather developments and school functioning.
The IMD forecast suggests that the region may continue to receive widespread rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds due to the strengthening low-pressure area along the Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coast. Fishermen have been advised against venturing into the sea, and coastal residents are urged to remain cautious.
The administration has also coordinated with disaster management teams to address possible contingencies, such as fallen trees, traffic blockages, and emergency evacuations. Local authorities have assured that control rooms are functioning round the clock to respond to citizen queries and distress calls.
Educational authorities have instructed schools to shift to online classes temporarily if necessary, depending on how long the rainfall persists. Schools are also asked to review safety measures, check campus infrastructure, and prepare for reopening once the weather stabilises.
Residents of both Puducherry and Karaikal are encouraged to stay indoors as much as possible, avoid waterlogged roads, and follow official alerts issued through social media and government portals. The government will assess the rainfall situation later in the day before making further decisions on reopening educational institutions.
The heavy rainfall has once again highlighted the region's vulnerability during the monsoon season. Despite several infrastructural improvements, low-lying areas in Puducherry and Karaikal continue to face inundation concerns. As rainfall persists, authorities are focusing on preventive steps to reduce disruption and ensure public safety.
Further announcements regarding the reopening of schools or any additional safety instructions will be communicated by the district administration based on updated weather evaluations.
