School Holiday Today, August 17, 2026: Schools in parts of India will remain closed today due to compensatory leave following Independence Day celebrations and adverse weather conditions. Students and parents in Himachal Pradesh, Odisha and parts of Punjab should check the latest instructions issued by their respective district or school authorities before travelling to school.

The Himachal Pradesh government has announced a holiday for government schools across the state on August 17. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu announced the compensatory holiday after government schools were kept open on August 15 for Independence Day celebrations.
A notification issued by the Directorate of School Education on July 29 had directed government schools to remain open on Independence Day. Since students and teachers attended the celebrations on Saturday, August 15, they have been granted a compensatory holiday today.
The arrangement specifically applies to government schools. Private schools may decide independently whether to observe the compensatory holiday, so students and parents should confirm the holiday with their respective schools.
Reports indicate that schools and colleges in Jalandhar are also closed on August 17. The closure is linked to compensatory leave for students and teachers who attended Independence Day programmes on August 15.
However, the holiday may not apply uniformly across Punjab. Students in Jalandhar should contact their school or college directly to confirm whether classes are suspended today and whether any revised academic schedule has been issued.
In Odisha, the Jajpur district administration has announced the closure of schools and Anganwadi centres on August 17 as a precautionary measure amid warnings of heavy rainfall.
The closure covers government and government-aided schools, Odisha Adarsha Vidyalayas and private educational institutions. Primary, upper-primary, high-school and higher-secondary students are included in the order. Anganwadi centres across Jajpur district will also remain closed.
The decision follows weather warnings from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and concerns over worsening rainfall conditions.
Earlier, districts including Mayurbhanj, Kendujhar and Balasore had also announced the closure of educational institutions because of adverse weather.
Schools remain open across Delhi-NCR, including Delhi, Noida, Greater Noida, Ghaziabad and Gurugram, as no general school holiday has been announced for these areas based on the information available.
Parents and students should nevertheless check messages from their individual schools, particularly if local weather conditions change.
Himachal Pradesh: Government schools closed as compensatory leave for Independence Day.
Punjab: Schools and colleges in Jalandhar reportedly closed; students should confirm with their institutions.
Odisha: Schools and Anganwadi centres in Jajpur closed due to heavy rainfall warnings.
Delhi-NCR: Schools remain open; no general closure announced for Delhi, Noida, Greater Noida, Ghaziabad or Gurugram.
Students are advised to follow official district administration and school notifications for the latest updates before leaving home.
