Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) Vice-Chancellor Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit has come under scrutiny for missing a significant Central Universities Vice-Chancellors' Conference held in Kevadia, Gujarat on July 10-11, 2025.

The event was organized by the Ministry of Education and attended by Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and top officials from various central universities to review the implementation progress of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
According to reports, Vice-Chancellor Pandit did not seek prior approval or inform the Ministry about her absence from the event. Her unexplained non-attendance has drawn a strong response from the Department of Higher Education, which has now officially sought an explanation in writing. The Ministry viewed her absence seriously, especially as the conference involved strategic planning, accountability metrics, and progress reviews of NEP goals across central institutions.
The absence has raised concerns regarding the lack of administrative communication from the leadership of one of India's premier universities. The Ministry emphasized that the participation of Vice-Chancellors in such conferences is crucial for policy discussions and collective decision-making in the higher education sector.
Sources indicate that while most central university heads attended the conference, a few-including JNU's VC-were absent without valid reasons or approvals. The Ministry is reportedly evaluating whether disciplinary action or formal warnings will be issued based on the explanation received.
This incident also comes amid broader calls for enhanced transparency, leadership accountability, and adherence to institutional protocols within India's higher education system. The controversy may further fuel debates on governance practices in universities, especially with NEP 2020 aiming to bring structural reform, autonomy, and improved academic outcomes across the board.
As of now, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has not issued any public clarification on the Vice-Chancellor's absence. The situation continues to develop as the Ministry awaits her formal response.
