The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main 2025 is set to see some major changes, as announced by the National Testing Agency (NTA). In a return to its original format, the NTA has decided to eliminate the optional questions in Section B across all papers. Previously, candidates had the flexibility to select five out of ten questions in this section, but now, they will be required to attempt all five questions for each subject. This change will impact Paper 1 for BE/BTech, Paper 2A for BArch, and Paper 2B for BPlanning courses.

Why the Change?
The optional questions were introduced as a temporary measure to accommodate the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. These adjustments were meant to ease the pressure on students who faced challenges in their education due to the global health crisis. With the World Health Organization (WHO) officially declaring the end of the pandemic as a public health emergency in May 2023, the NTA decided it was time to revert to the pre-pandemic exam structure.
The NTA clarified, "Since the declaration by the UN World Health Organization (WHO) on the end of the COVID-19 public health emergency on May 5, 2023, it has been decided to discontinue the optional selection of questions. The examination will return to its original format, where Section B will contain five mandatory questions per subject. Candidates will be required to attempt all five, with no options for selection."
How Will It Affect Students?
This change means students must prepare for a more structured and standardized exam. In the previous format, the ability to choose questions allowed students some flexibility, especially if they were stronger in certain areas. Now, with all questions being mandatory, students must ensure they are well-versed in all topics covered in Section B of each subject.
This shift applies to all JEE Main papers, including BE/BTech, BArch, and BPlanning. It levels the playing field by ensuring that every student answers the same set of questions, making the assessment more uniform.
Registration and Preparation
Students aiming to take JEE Main 2025 should stay updated, as the registration process for the exam will be opening soon. The NTA will release more details in the upcoming JEE Main 2025 Information Bulletin. Prospective candidates are advised to regularly check the official JEE Main website at jeemain.nta.nic.in for updates.
The elimination of optional questions signals a shift back to the original structure of the exam, marking an important transition from the pandemic era. As students adapt to this new format, thorough preparation will be key. Ensuring they are ready for all questions in each subject will be crucial for success in the JEE Main 2025.
This move not only reinforces the NTA's commitment to a standardized testing framework but also reflects the broader return to normalcy post-pandemic. For students, this is a call to refine their preparation strategies and embrace the challenge of a more uniform exam.
