Due to the harsh weather conditions, the Jammu and Kashmir government made the decision to postpone the reopening of schools in the Valley and the winter zone areas of the Jammu division. Originally, these schools were set to welcome students back on March 1. The decision was influenced by the continuous spells of wet weather, which were predicted to persist until March 3. Consequently, the reopening date has been pushed to March 7, according to an official announcement. This decision comes as an extension to the winter break that had been declared on December 6 of the previous year.

The winter vacations, which began in December, were initially scheduled to end on February 28. Students from Classes 1 to 5 in the affected regions were on break from December 10, while those in Classes 6 to 12 commenced their holidays a week later, on December 16. However, the inclement weather conditions, characterized by overnight snowfall that disrupted air, rail, and road connectivity last Friday, prompted this extension. Reports of landslides, mudslides, and shooting stones on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway further underscored the severity of the situation.
Sakina Itoo, a minister in the J-K government, shared the official order on X, confirming the extension of the winter vacations. The snowfall not only impacted transportation but also blanketed various parts of the region, affecting its plains and higher reaches. While Srinagar experienced light snowfall, popular tourist destinations such as Gulmarg, Sonamarg, and Pahalgam were hit by moderate to heavy snowfall, further justifying the government's decision to extend the school break.
In conclusion, the extended winter vacation is a response to the adverse weather conditions across Jammu and Kashmir. By shifting the reopening of schools to March 7, the government aims to ensure the safety and well-being of students and educators in the region. This adjustment allows for the weather to improve and transportation routes to become safer for travel, facilitating a smoother transition back to normal school activities.
