IITs to Discontinue Branch Change Option for First-Year Students

Several Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) have decided to eliminate the option for first-year students to change their core branch. This decision, affecting nine out of the 23 IITs, marks a significant shift in academic policy. Traditionally, students were allowed to switch their core discipline after the first year if they met certain criteria, but this option will no longer be available.

IITs to Discontinue Branch Change Option

The branch change option allowed students to switch their core discipline after the first year, provided they met specific criteria. Nearly half of the incoming students wished to change their branch, but only about 10% managed to do so. To be eligible, a student needed a CGPA above 7.50 and more than 32 credits by the end of the first academic year. The selection was based strictly on merit, determined by CGPA.

The high CGPA requirement and limited seats made this process highly competitive. Many students spent most of their first year focused solely on academics, often missing out on social activities like joining clubs or participating in college fests. This intense focus could negatively affect their overall college experience.

Students often felt pressured to meet these stringent requirements, leading them to spend excessive time studying in their rooms or libraries. This pressure could be overwhelming, especially since many had already spent years preparing for JEE Main and JEE Advanced exams during their final years of school.

The primary reason for discontinuing the branch change option is to reduce stress among students. IITs believe that removing this option will alleviate some of the academic pressure that first-year students face. The goal is to create a more balanced and less stressful environment for new students.

Despite their efforts and sacrifices, if students failed to secure their desired branch, they often felt disappointed and carried this dissatisfaction throughout their BTech degree. This feeling could impact their motivation and overall academic performance in subsequent years.

Expert Opinions

Experts argue that while the intention behind allowing branch changes was good, it inadvertently added more stress to an already challenging academic environment. They suggest that focusing on holistic development rather than just academic performance could benefit students more in the long run.

The decision to discontinue branch changes aims to help students enjoy a more well-rounded college experience without the added pressure of meeting high CGPA requirements just for a chance to switch branches.

This move by some IITs reflects a broader trend towards prioritizing student well-being over rigid academic goals. By reducing unnecessary stressors, institutions hope to foster a healthier and more supportive educational environment for all students.
