IIT Madras and the University of Birmingham have collaboratively introduced a master's program in Sustainable Energy Systems, with applications now open for the inaugural course. The program offers students the opportunity to study in both Chennai and Birmingham, culminating in a single degree conferred jointly by both universities.

Participants will engage in substantial individual projects within internationally recognized research groups, enabling them to address real-world challenges.
The University of Birmingham boasts a rich history in energy research and education, marked by significant contributions such as the UK's pioneering hydrogen refueling station and advancements in large-scale energy storage and cold-chain technology in Africa. The Birmingham Energy Institute (BEI) has been a pivotal force in multidisciplinary energy research within the UK university landscape for nearly 15 years.
The program provides flexibility for students, who commence their studies at IIT Madras and undergo a brief industrial placement. Subsequently, students can choose between two pathways: studying in the UK for either 12 months with a research project in Birmingham or six months followed by completion of the program and a research project at IIT Madras.
Applications are currently available, with offer letters expected to be dispatched starting from June 26, 2024. Interested candidates can apply through the provided link. The interdisciplinary curriculum focuses on energy systems and technologies essential for fostering sustainability, encompassing technology development, engineering, and societal, economic, environmental, and policy considerations to align with net-zero objectives. Course instruction will be led by research personnel with diverse backgrounds in academia, industry, and policy, leveraging innovative pedagogical approaches and research methodologies from IIT Madras.
