The Science and Maths Olympiad, organized by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Guwahati in collaboration with Samagra Shiksha Assam, drew participation from over 1.14 lakh students representing 3,828 schools across Assam.

The Olympiad unfolded in two phases: first, an OMR-based physical pen-paper test aimed at evaluating secondary school students' grasp and application of scientific and mathematical principles. This phase was followed by a state-level round, with district-level tests conducted on March 18.
Objectives of the Olympiad
- Fostering a culture of scientific inquiry and mathematical reasoning among school students
- Identifying and nurturing talented individuals in the STEM fields
- Providing a competitive platform for students to showcase their skills and abilities
- Promoting awareness about the significance of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education among students and educators
- Encouraging innovation and critical thinking skills among students
From each district, the top two performers earned the chance to advance to the ultimate round of the Olympiad held at IIT Guwahati. This final stage provided a platform for finalists to engage with peers from across the state. The institute noted that the final round, which took place on March 30, 2024, featured 62 finalists from classes 9th and 10th, ultimately yielding three state champions.
IIT Guwahati has a strong collaborative partnership with the Government of Assam on multiple projects. One notable collaboration is with Samagra Shiksha Assam as part of the Rashtriya Avishkar Abhiyan, leading to endeavors such as the Science and Maths Olympiad.
