Prof. Mahadeo Jaiswal, Director of IIM Sambalpur, recently emphasized the institute's commitment to revitalizing India's indigenous handloom sector. Highlighting a stark historical contrast, he noted that India once produced 25% of the world's textiles before British rule, a figure that has now dwindled to less than 3%. This decline underscores the urgent need for initiatives like IIM Sambalpur's training programs aimed at bolstering the sector.

In a significant move, IIM Sambalpur organized the second edition of a 12-day weekend certificate programme titled the 'Small Business Management Training Programme' for master weavers in western Odisha. Supported by the Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) and conducted under the Centre for Responsible Business, this program addresses crucial subjects such as design, digital marketing, Goods and Services Tax (GST), financial management, operations, and communication skills.
Prof. Jaiswal remarked, "We believe the textile industry is crucial for India's development. To promote marketing and distribution, we initially partnered with Flipkart. However, we quickly realized that our skilled master weavers and artisans needed fundamental business knowledge in areas such as GST and invoicing, marketing, and business training in Odia languages." He further highlighted that this initiative makes IIM Sambalpur the first management institute in India to offer business education in the vernacular language, specifically supporting local enterprises.
Digital Platforms and Market Reach
Approximately 25 master weavers are participating in this training programme, which places significant emphasis on leveraging digital platforms like Flipkart, Amazon, and ONDC for market access. The initiative aims to equip these weavers with essential skills to thrive in today's digital marketplace.
Prof. Jaiswal also outlined the next phase of training, designed to enhance the weavers' skills in market creation. The curriculum includes instruction on the five Ps of marketing (Product, Price, Place, Promotion, and People) and an exploration of global market trends. "To facilitate this process, incubation support is necessary. Consequently, the initiation of a startup aimed at global product marketing is underway. The ultimate objective is to establish a 'Bunkar Valley,' akin to Silicon Valley, with a specific emphasis on elevating India's weaving industry on the global stage," he added.
This initiative by IIM Sambalpur represents a significant step towards reviving India's rich textile heritage by empowering local artisans with modern business acumen and digital tools. By providing comprehensive business training in their native language and facilitating access to digital marketplaces, the program aims to create sustainable growth and global recognition for India's indigenous handloom sector.
