IGNOU Introduces MBA in Health Care and Hospital Management

The Indira Gandhi National Institute of Open University (IGNOU) has introduced a new Master of Business Administration (MBA) programme in Health Care and Hospital Management. This innovative course is designed for graduates who have achieved a minimum of 50% marks (45% for reserved category candidates, as per Indian government norms).

The primary objective of this programme is to create a skilled workforce ready for employment in healthcare institutions, related organizations, and hospitals within both the private and public sectors. Through this initiative, IGNOU aims to provide effective support and ensure high-quality healthcare services across the nation, including in remote areas.

Course Structure and Fees

The MBA programme in Health Care and Hospital Management consists of 112 credits, spread over four semesters. The first two semesters include seven core courses each, amounting to four credits per course. The third and fourth semesters offer specialized courses, focusing on advanced topics relevant to the field. Key components of the course structure are:

  • First and Second Semesters: Each semester features seven core courses, providing a strong foundation in essential healthcare management principles.
  • Third Semester: Students are required to complete a project and undergo practical training. This involves being posted in hospitals or healthcare institutions, allowing them to gain valuable hands-on experience.
  • Fourth Semester: Continuation of specialized courses along with a mandatory three-month internship in a healthcare-associated institution or hospital, identified by the students themselves.

The fee structure for the programme is as follows:

  • Rs 15,500 for the 1st and 2nd semesters
  • Rs 19,500 for the 3rd semester
  • Rs 17,500 for the 4th semester

Upon completion of the programme, students will have acquired both theoretical knowledge and practical skills, enabling them to apply scientific approaches to managing people, materials, finances, and communication within healthcare settings. Key learning outcomes include:

  • Management Techniques: Understanding modern management techniques such as inventory control, economic order quantity (EOQ), operational research, organizational development, and management information systems.
  • Problem-Solving and Decision-Making: Planning and tackling hospital management problems using problem-solving and decision-making methods.
  • Biostatistics: Utilizing biostatistics in planning and medico-administrative research.
  • Patient Care Needs: Assessing clinical and non-clinical patient care needs effectively.
  • Administrative and Technical Requirements: Understanding the administrative and technical requirements of physicians and paramedical personnel.
  • General Management Principles: Applying general management principles to various services for maximum efficiency.
  • Health Management and Epidemiology: Learning health management principles and practices along with epidemiological techniques to study disease prevalence patterns in communities, which helps in planning healthcare services.

Graduates of this programme will be well-equipped to take on managerial and administrative roles in healthcare institutions or healthcare-related organizations. The comprehensive training and practical experience provided by the course will prepare students for a range of positions, ensuring they can contribute effectively to the healthcare sector.
