In a groundbreaking move to revolutionize access to scholarly resources, the Indian government has launched the "One Nation One Subscription" scheme, an ambitious initiative aimed at democratizing access to high-quality research and academic journals nationwide. Spearheaded by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, this scheme promises to be a transformative leap forward for India's academic and research landscape, making scholarly articles easily accessible to students, faculty, and researchers across the country.

With an investment of Rs. 6,000 crore over the next three years (2025-2027), the scheme will serve more than 6,300 institutions, including universities, colleges, and research laboratories under both central and state governments. This will directly benefit around 1.8 crore students, faculty members, and researchers. The initiative ensures that academic and research institutions-from major universities to those in tier 2 and tier 3 cities-can access global knowledge and contribute to expanding India's research ecosystem.
The initiative not only enhances access to scholarly material but also aligns with the government's broader goals of fostering a culture of research and innovation. By supplementing the existing Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF) initiative, "One Nation One Subscription" will propel research and development, aiming to contribute towards the vision of a developed India by 2047, as outlined in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
Coordinated by INFLIBNET (Information and Library Network), the autonomous inter-university center of the UGC, this scheme ensures that the subscription benefits reach the maximum number of institutions, creating an interconnected network of research. Additionally, the scheme will be reviewed periodically to monitor its usage and its impact on research output, especially publications from Indian authors.
To ensure successful implementation, the government will launch comprehensive Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) campaigns, informing students and faculty about the subscription and how to access it. State governments are also encouraged to initiate localized campaigns to raise awareness, ensuring the initiative has far-reaching effects across the country.
The "One Nation One Subscription" scheme represents a historic step toward improving India's educational and research capabilities. By offering unrestricted access to global research, it promises to enhance the quality of higher education, foster innovation, and align India with international research standards. The government's proactive approach in supporting education and research signals a brighter future for India's academic landscape, empowering millions to contribute to the country's growth.
