IMD Issues Heatwave Warning Across North and Central India

Several Indian states have announced extended summer vacations and revised school timings due to the intensifying heatwave conditions across North and Central India.

Delhi & NCR Schools Revise Timings Due to Heatwave

Following warnings issued by the India Meteorological Department, state governments and education departments have taken precautionary measures to protect students from extreme temperatures expected between mid-May and June 2026.

Heatwave Forces Extended Summer School Holidays 2026 Across UP, Delhi, Haryana & NCR Regions

States including Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan, Delhi, and Telangana have recorded temperatures crossing 45 degrees Celsius in several districts. In response, authorities have either extended summer holidays, shifted schools to morning schedules, or temporarily suspended afternoon classes for students.

The revised guidelines apply to schools affiliated with Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), ICSE, state boards, government schools, and private institutions. Officials have emphasized student safety amid severe heatwave conditions and rising health concerns.

State-Wise Summer Vacation Schedule 2026

Uttar Pradesh

The Uttar Pradesh government has directed schools in multiple districts to extend summer vacations due to soaring temperatures. In many regions, schools are expected to remain closed until the final week of June. Morning classes have also been introduced in some areas for administrative work and examinations.

Delhi & NCR

Schools across Delhi and NCR regions have revised timings to avoid afternoon exposure. Several private schools have announced early closures, while authorities continue monitoring the weather situation. Parents have been advised to ensure children stay hydrated and avoid outdoor activities during peak heat hours.

Haryana

The Haryana education department has extended school holidays in heatwave-affected districts. Schools functioning during special classes or remedial sessions have been instructed to operate only during morning hours.

Rajasthan

Rajasthan, one of the worst-affected states during summer, has also revised academic schedules. Schools in many districts have suspended afternoon assemblies and outdoor activities due to the risk of heatstroke.

Telangana

In Telangana, authorities have issued advisories for schools to avoid conducting activities under direct sunlight. Educational institutions have been allowed to alter timings depending on local weather conditions.

Why Authorities Extended School Holidays

According to the IMD, heatwave conditions are expected to intensify further across northern plains and central regions over the coming weeks. Prolonged exposure to extreme temperatures can lead to dehydration, fatigue, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke, especially among children and senior citizens.

Education departments have stated that the precautionary measures are necessary to protect students' health and minimize travel during peak afternoon temperatures. Many schools have also encouraged online assignments and holiday homework to continue academic engagement during the extended break.

Health Advisory for Students and Parents

Authorities have advised parents to:

  • Keep children indoors during afternoon hours
  • Ensure adequate water intake
  • Avoid outdoor sports and physical activities
  • Use light cotton clothing
  • Monitor symptoms of dehydration or heat exhaustion

Schools have also been directed to maintain proper drinking water facilities and emergency medical support whenever campuses reopen.

Conclusion

As heatwave conditions continue to intensify across several parts of India, state governments are prioritizing student safety through extended school holidays and revised schedules. Students and parents are advised to stay updated with official announcements from their respective school administrations and state education departments regarding reopening dates and revised academic calendars.
