As temperatures continue to soar across Odisha, the state government has announced a crucial change in school timings to protect students from the extreme heat. Effective from April 2, all educational institutions, including Anganwadi centres, will operate from 7 AM to 9 AM. This decision follows the completion of examinations on March 27, 2025, and is aimed at mitigating the risks posed by the relentless heatwave. The move was confirmed by Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari, highlighting the government's commitment to ensuring student safety.

Heatwave Triggers Emergency Measures
The districts of Boudh, Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Bolangir, and Sundargarh have been hit hardest by the heatwave, with temperatures soaring to dangerous levels. To combat this, the state has introduced a series of preventive measures, including setting up drinking water facilities and shaded rest areas along busy roads. These efforts aim to reduce the risk of sunstroke, a condition that has resulted in over 330 deaths in Odisha in the past decade.
Additionally, the Panchayati Raj Department has allocated Rs 300 crore for the installation of new tube wells in areas facing water scarcity. The government has assured that more funds will be provided if necessary to address the crisis effectively.
Decentralized Approach for Immediate Action
To ensure swift and localized responses, the state government has authorized district collectors and relevant departments to take immediate measures without waiting for approvals. This decentralized strategy is expected to expedite relief efforts and enhance the overall response to the heatwave crisis.
Rising Temperatures Raise Alarm
Weather reports indicate that Bolangir town recently recorded Odisha's highest temperature at 41.1°C. Other cities, including Titlagarh, Jharsuguda, and Sundargarh, have also reported intense heat, exacerbating concerns about public health and safety.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for multiple districts, including Bhadrak, Jharsuguda, Keonjhargarh, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, and Sundargarh, warning of potential thunderstorms and lightning. A yellow alert has also been declared for Sambalpur, Deogarh, Boudh, Angul, and Jajpur, indicating the possibility of additional extreme weather events.
Government's Comprehensive Response
The Odisha government's decision to revise school timings and implement emergency measures reflects a proactive approach to disaster management. By focusing on student welfare, enhancing water accessibility, and empowering local authorities, the state is taking significant steps to minimize the impact of the ongoing heatwave.
With continued vigilance and timely interventions, Odisha aims to safeguard its communities against the increasing threats posed by rising temperatures. Residents are urged to stay hydrated, avoid unnecessary outdoor activities, and follow government advisories to stay safe during this challenging period.
