The Union Education Ministry's Commission for Scientific and Technical Terminology (CSTT) has launched a dedicated website that offers technical terms in all 22 official Indian languages. The platform, shabd.education.gov.in, serves as a central repository, housing technical glossaries developed by CSTT and other institutions, making them easily accessible to users in digital format.

The portal currently features 322 glossaries containing around 22,00,000 words, with plans to expand this collection to 450 glossaries. Users can search for scientific and technical terms in Indian languages and offer feedback on the terms provided by CSTT. The platform allows users to perform detailed searches based on language, subject, dictionary type, and language pairs. Additionally, users can choose to search within a specific glossary or across the entire database.
This initiative is crucial in promoting technical education, including fields like medicine and engineering, in Indian languages. By providing equivalent terms for complex technical concepts, the website aims to bridge the gap between English-dominated technical education and regional language speakers.
The CSTT, established in 1961, focuses on developing and standardizing scientific and technical terms in Hindi and other Indian languages. It has published textbooks, monographs, and journals such as Vigyan Garima Sindhu and Gyan Garima Sindhu. CSTT also develops administrative glossaries for government agencies, research institutions, and public sector organizations. The work is carried out by subject-specific committees and language experts who identify and standardize terminology. The National Translation Mission also aids this process by ensuring consistency across languages.
Since its launch in March 2024, the website has received over 1,22,643 hits from various regions in India and abroad. The platform not only offers technical terms but also encourages user engagement through feedback options, ensuring that terms remain relevant and accurate.
This initiative aligns with the broader educational goal of making technical education more inclusive by integrating regional languages into the framework of higher learning. By consolidating resources into a single, accessible platform, CSTT seeks to enhance the learning experience for students, educators, researchers, and professionals who rely on accurate scientific and technical terminology in their native languages.
Preserving Linguistic Heritage and Promoting Accessibility
The portal represents a significant stride toward preserving India's linguistic heritage while advancing educational accessibility. As more glossaries are added, the website is expected to become an invaluable resource for India's multilingual population, supporting both academic and professional pursuits.
