Global Science Festival Kerala 2024: Unveiling the Fusion of Art and Science

Embark on a captivating journey of exploration as the Global Science Festival Kerala (GSFK) unfolds its month-long extravaganza from January 15 to February 15, 2024. Presented by the Kerala State Council for Scientific, Technological, and Environmental (KSCSTE) and Amuseum ArtScience, this event promises to stand as Asia's largest thematically curated scientific exhibition, seamlessly blending science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics (STEAM).

Unlike traditional approaches to science education, the GSFK endeavors to reshape our perception and interaction with science. Through innovative methods like "ART meets SCIENCE," the festival aims to initiate a democratic discourse that goes beyond conventional modes of science communication. The goal is to leave visitors with profound and enduring impressions of scientific philosophy and value.

The primary audience for this event includes art and science enthusiasts, scientists, and the student community. Renowned figures such as Morten P Meldal, Nobel Prize winner in chemistry in 2022, along with scientists from NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) USA, ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation), and other esteemed scientific institutions, will address the event.

During the festival, IISER (Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research) will host a conference on January 27, facilitating student engagement with diverse scientists. Furthermore, on February 2, the directors of IITs in Tirupati, Palakkad, Dharwad, Mandi, and Bhubaneswar will convene for an educational technology conclave.

As stated on the official website, "GSFK is an interdisciplinary and international approach to recognize, explore, and experience Science through the collaboration of artists, scientists, designers, architects, musicians, and more." The festival employs outreach programs, satellite events, and various exciting campaigns throughout the year, culminating in the grand festival, ensuring the essence of science reaches grassroots levels.

Featured at Thiruvananthapuram's Kanakakkunnu in early December last year, the science extravaganza attracted a massive crowd. Organized in collaboration with international science exhibition agencies, national and international museums, and esteemed organizations, the festival is supported by entities such as Kerala Sasthra Sanketika Sarvakalasala, Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation, Kerala Sastra Sahitya Parishad, and various national and international organizations, including the renowned Museum of the Moon.

A major highlight of the festival is the Night Sky Watching and Tenting, commencing from January 20. Spread over 25 acres within the Bio 360 Life Sciences Park under the Kerala government, the GSFK will showcase 51 attractions in 18 pavilions, covering a vast area of two-and-a-half-lakh square feet, according to organizers.

GSFK is anticipated to act as the initial phase in the creation of a lasting science exhibition center in Thiruvananthapuram, aiming ultimately to construct a 'Science City' with a national scope. Chief Minister Vijayan, on June 6 of the previous year, revealed the official festival logo, inspired by the renowned 'Tree of Life' illustration by Charles Darwin, the British naturalist renowned for advancing the theory of biological evolution through natural selection.
