The Allahabad High Court has directed the Uttar Pradesh government to prepare a fresh selection list for the appointment of 69,000 assistant teachers. The court has invalidated the previous lists from June 2020 and January 2022, which included 6,800 candidates.

This ruling came from a bench comprising Justice AR Masoodi and Justice Brijraj Singh, who were hearing 90 special appeals filed by Mahendra Pal and others against a single-judge order from March last year.
Impact on Current Teachers:
The court was clear in its directive that the creation of the new selection list should not disrupt the employment of current assistant teachers. To prevent any interruption in students' education, the court ordered that these teachers be allowed to complete the ongoing academic session. This approach ensures a smooth transition, balancing the need for a fair recruitment process with the continuity of learning in schools.
Revised Reservation Guidelines:
The bench also amended an earlier ruling related to reservation policies. It stated that reserved category candidates who qualify under the general category merit list should be placed in the general category. Furthermore, the court ruled that vertical reservation benefits should be extended to candidates in horizontal reservation categories as well. These changes are intended to enhance the fairness and representation of various groups within the recruitment process.
Clarifications on Reservation Policies:
Previously, a single-judge had ruled that candidates benefiting from reservations in the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) should not be considered for the unreserved category, even if they met the general category cut-off marks. However, the current bench clarified that these candidates should indeed be migrated to the general category if they meet the merit criteria. This clarification addresses concerns raised by appellants regarding the accuracy and fairness of reservation policies in the selection of 69,000 teachers.
The appellants had argued that state officials did not correctly apply reservation policies in the selection process, particularly questioning the legitimacy of appointing 6,800 teachers. The court upheld the single judge's decision to cancel the January 5, 2022, selection list for these reserved category candidates.
Timeline for the New Selection List:
The court has mandated that state authorities issue the new selection list within three months. This timeline aims to expedite the recruitment process, ensuring that it proceeds without unnecessary delays.
This ruling is expected to have a significant impact on the ongoing assistant teacher recruitment process in Uttar Pradesh. The revised guidelines are designed to ensure that the selection process is both fair and transparent while maintaining educational stability for students across the state.
