Free Language Textbooks for WBCHSE Students

The West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education (WBCHSE) has embarked on a significant initiative to distribute free language textbooks to students. This move is part of a broader overhaul in the state's educational framework, including the introduction of a semester-based system for classes 11 and 12 in state schools.

Challenges in Distribution

WBCHSE President Chiranjib Bhattacharya has acknowledged the logistical challenges that may delay the distribution of these textbooks. Despite extensive efforts, the printing process is taking longer than expected. The council is working diligently to resolve these issues and expedite the distribution process.

Updated Curriculum

The WBCHSE has revised the entire curriculum after 11 years, with a particular focus on language subjects. The new curriculum is structured into four semesters, providing a more segmented and manageable approach to learning. In support of this transition, the state government is overseeing the printing of all language textbooks, which will be distributed to students free of charge.

To mitigate the impact of distribution delays, the council is uploading the textual materials for language subjects on its official website. This initiative aims to provide immediate access to study materials for students, teachers, and parents, ensuring continuity in education until the physical textbooks are ready.

Semester-Based System

The semester system will be introduced for class 11 in the academic session 2024-25 and for class 12 in 2025-26. Under this new system, the traditional 10+2 course is divided into four parts. Class 11 will cover semesters 1 and 2, while class 12 will encompass semesters 3 and 4. According to the new state education policy draft, board exams will be held after the third and fourth semesters, providing a more continuous assessment method.

Current Education Structure

The existing 4+4+2+2 education structure remains unchanged. This structure consists of four years in the foundation stage, followed by four years in upper primary, and two years in secondary education. The semester-based system for higher secondary classes is an addition to this established structure, aimed at enhancing the depth and breadth of students' educational experience.

School Reopening Dates

State-run and state-aided schools are set to reopen after the summer vacation on June 3, with classes starting from June 10. In the interim, some schools have already commenced online classes for Class 12 students, ensuring that their education continues seamlessly despite the break.

The initiative to provide free language textbooks is a significant step towards improving educational resources for students under the WBCHSE. While logistical challenges persist, the council's proactive measures, including the provision of online materials, reflect a commitment to minimizing disruption and enhancing the quality of education. The introduction of a semester-based system further underscores the state's dedication to continuous improvement in its educational policies and practices.
