The Ministry of Education (MoE) has launched the second phase of its capacity-building program focused on specific learning disabilities (SLD) under the Malaviya Mission Teacher Training Programme (MMTTP). This initiative is designed to enhance the skills and knowledge of higher educational institutions (HEIs) to better support students with SLD. The program, which will run until December, includes both online and in-person sessions and targets a newly selected group of HEIs.

In the initial phase, 27 HEIs, including Central Universities, IITs, IIITs, IIMs, IISERs, SPAs, and NITs, participated. The first phase involved various activities such as orientation, sensitization, master classes, in-person regional workshops, and monitoring of implementation. Conducted between January and July, this phase was a collaborative effort with Changeinkk Foundation.
Sanjay Murthy, the Higher Education Secretary, emphasized the importance of addressing learning disabilities as highlighted by the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. "The New National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 recognizes learning disabilities among students, aiming for equitable and inclusive education for all. HEIs must be aware of students with specific disabilities, including learning disabilities, and should be sensitized to address the associated challenges," Murthy stated.
He also stressed the need for ongoing capacity-building programs to effectively address these challenges. "To tackle this issue, it's crucial that regular capacity programs on learning disabilities are conducted," he added.
The second phase of the program will concentrate on strategies and tools for identifying and assessing students with SLD, as well as addressing their needs. The Ministry of Education noted, "This phase will focus on sensitizing the heads of institutions; the heads of five departments along with two nominees each from respective departments."
Participants will take part in interactive workshops, expert-led seminars, and practical sessions, all aimed at improving their ability to foster inclusive learning environments. "After successful completion, the program will be replicated with a new set of HEIs over a six-month cycle," Murthy explained.
This initiative highlights the Ministry's commitment to creating an inclusive educational environment where all students, regardless of their learning challenges, can succeed. By equipping educators with the necessary tools and knowledge, the program seeks to ensure that students with specific learning disabilities receive the support they need throughout their academic careers.
