2025-26 Union Budget Allocates Over Rs 1.28 Lakh Crore For Education

The 2025-26 Union Budget has earmarked over Rs 1.28 lakh crore for education, enhancing infrastructure, AI integration, and expanding IIT and medical college capacities. Key initiatives include digital resources and increased fellowships for technology research.

The 2025-26 Union Budget has unveiled a significant investment in the education sector, with more than Rs 1.28 lakh crore earmarked for various initiatives. This represents an increase from the previous year's revised estimate of Rs 1.14 lakh crore. The allocation sees the Higher Education department receiving Rs 50,067 crore, while the School Education department gets Rs 78,572 crore. Among the key highlights, the budget promises to boost infrastructure at the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), add 10,000 new seats to medical colleges, and make a considerable push towards Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education.

Major Funding Boost For Indian Education In 2025-26

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman detailed plans to enhance educational infrastructure, including a significant expansion for the IITs and the introduction of digital resources through the 'Bharatiya Bhasha Pushtak' scheme. This scheme aims to provide schools and higher education institutions with digital versions of Indian language books. Moreover, the budget focuses on expanding IIT Patna and creating additional infrastructure at five new IITs, allowing for 6,500 more students. This expansion is particularly noteworthy ahead of the upcoming Bihar Assembly polls.

The budget allocation for the IITs has increased to Rs 11,349 crore, up from last year's revised estimate of Rs 10,467 crore. This funding aims to double the number of students at the 23 IITs over the past decade to 1.35 lakh. The government's commitment to education is further underscored by its plan to add 10,000 seats to medical colleges and hospitals in the next year, with the aim of adding a total of 75,000 seats over the next five years. This initiative builds on the government's decade-long effort, which has seen a 130% increase in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education seats.

Advancing Technology and AI in Education

The government's push towards advancing technology and AI in education is evident in its pledge to provide 10,000 fellowships for technology research in IITs and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) over five years. Additionally, the establishment of five national centres for excellence will promote global expertise and partnerships in skilling, further enhancing India's educational landscape. To foster a scientific temperament among the youth, 50,000 Atal Tinkering Labs will be introduced in government schools within the next five years.

A significant part of the budget's focus on technology includes enhancing broadband connectivity to all government secondary schools and primary healthcare centres in rural areas. This move is complemented by a substantial AI push, highlighted by the allocation of Rs 500 crore towards establishing a Centre of Excellence in AI for education. This comes after the announcement of three AI centres of excellence in agriculture, sustainable cities, and health in 2023, demonstrating the government's commitment to leveraging AI across various sectors, including education.

Funding Allocations Across Educational Institutions

The budget not only benefits technological advancements and infrastructural expansions but also increases funding allocations for various educational bodies. From the University Grants Commission (UGC) to the National Council of Education Research and Training (NCERT), most entities under the Ministry of Education have seen an increase in funding. The Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), historically subject to budget cuts to encourage self-reliance, have received an increased allocation of Rs 251 crore, up from last year's Rs 227 crore. However, not all institutions have enjoyed an increase in funding, with the Indian Institute of Science, Education and Research (IISERs) and World Class Institutions experiencing cuts in their allocated budgets.

To conclude, the 2025-26 Union Budget outlines a comprehensive plan to elevate India's education sector through infrastructure development, increased medical seats, and a significant emphasis on technology and AI. These initiatives aim to prepare India's youth for the future, reinforcing the government's commitment to enhancing the quality and reach of education across the nation.
