Delhi's Day of Terror: Over 40 Schools Receive Bomb Threats

On Monday, Delhi found itself gripped by anxiety as over 40 schools, including prestigious institutions like Mother Mary's School, British School, and Delhi Public School (DPS), faced bomb threats. Emailed warnings triggered panic among parents, students, and school administrations, prompting swift evacuations and widespread alarm.

The ominous emails began rolling in early in the morning. Delhi Public School, RK Puram, reported receiving the threat at 7:06 AM, while GD Goenka School in Paschim Vihar was targeted at 6:15 AM. The message was menacing and direct:

"I planted multiple bombs inside (school) buildings. The bombs are small and hidden very well. It will not cause much damage to the building, but many people will be injured when the bombs detonate. If I do not receive $30,000, I will detonate the bombs."

This chilling threat triggered immediate action. Schools acted swiftly, sending students home while summoning authorities to investigate.

Emergency Response

The Delhi Police, fire services, bomb detection squads, and dog units descended upon the affected schools. Their search efforts were exhaustive and thorough. Fortunately, no suspicious objects were found at either DPS RK Puram or GD Goenka School, easing some of the tension. This incident followed a similar scare just a week earlier, where Venkateshwar Global School in Rohini received a bomb threat that turned out to be a hoax.

The recurrence of such incidents has drawn judicial attention. On November 19, the Delhi High Court directed the Aam Aadmi Party-led government and the Delhi Police to develop a detailed action plan and Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) within eight weeks. Justice Sanjeev Narula emphasized that this SOP should involve collaboration among school administrations, municipal authorities, and emergency services to ensure swift, coordinated responses to such emergencies.

Delhi's bomb threats echo a broader trend of false alarms across the nation. Recently, bomb threats in Uttar Pradesh targeting key locations in Lucknow and threats against high-profile sites like the Taj Mahal were found to be hoaxes. Even Prime Minister Narendra Modi was named as a potential target in a WhatsApp threat to Mumbai Police's traffic helpline.
