Delhi University is gearing up to launch a PhD programme in Hindu Studies by the 2025-26 academic session. This decision follows a recommendation from the Governing Body of the Centre for Hindu Studies, signifying a strategic expansion in the academic offerings related to Hinduism. Initially proposed to start in the current academic year, the program's launch was deferred. The Centre for Hindu Studies, inaugurated in 2023, underscores Delhi University's commitment to broadening research and educational opportunities in fields connected to Hindu Studies, emphasizing the importance of Brahmanical texts.

Delhi University Announces Hindu Studies PhD Programme

Prerna Malhotra, the Joint Director of the Centre for Hindu Studies, highlighted the growing interest among students for research opportunities in this area. "Our Governing Board has recommended starting a PhD in Hindu Studies, and the matter will be placed before the Academic Council. Students have been approaching the Centre, enquiring about research opportunities, especially those who have already qualified JRF and NET in Hindu Studies. As a premier institution, Delhi University is committed to providing such opportunities and advancing research in diverse areas of Hindu Studies," she conveyed to PTI.

Setting the Academic Framework

The proposed PhD programme is not only a step towards enhancing the academic framework but also aims to cater to the increasing number of students showing a keen interest in pursuing advanced studies in Hinduism. The governing bodies involved have laid down a plan to introduce around 10 seats initially, which could increase based on the Centre's capacity and academic demand. These seats will include reservations and supernumerary categories, ensuring a broad and inclusive approach to admissions.

The eligibility criteria for the PhD programme align with the stringent standards set by Delhi University, requiring applicants to have a Master's degree in Hindu Studies or related subjects with a minimum of 55 percent marks. Furthermore, candidates must either have qualified for the JRF/NET or passed the university's PhD eligibility test. Additionally, provisions for relaxation in criteria for reserved categories will be followed as outlined in the PhD Information Bulletin, ensuring equitable access to education.

Expanding Research Opportunities

Delhi University's commitment to expanding research opportunities in Hindu Studies is evident from its decision to establish the Centre for Hindu Studies. This initiative not only broadens the academic landscape but also provides a dedicated platform for exploring Hindu scriptures and philosophies. Until permanent faculty appointments are made, the research supervision for the PhD programme will involve faculty members from allied departments and colleges with expertise in Hindu Studies, fostering a collaborative academic environment.

The Academic Council's meeting on December 27 will be a critical milestone for the PhD programme, where the recommendation for its initiation will be reviewed. Following approval from the Council, the proposal will advance to the Executive Council, the university's apex decision-making body, for final approval. With the establishment of the Centre for Hindu Studies and the launch of its first MA batch in November 2023, Delhi University has already taken significant steps towards offering comprehensive education in Hindu Studies.

The introduction of a PhD programme in Hindu Studies at Delhi University marks a significant advancement in the academic exploration of Hinduism. This initiative not only opens new avenues for research but also enriches the academic fabric by offering students opportunities to delve deeper into Hindu Studies. With the necessary approvals pending, the academic community eagerly awaits the formalization of this programme, anticipating its positive impact on the study and understanding of Hindu culture and philosophy.
