The Department of Education in Delhi, India, has recently released a directive stating that all schools within the city must ensure a minimum of 220 working days within a single academic year.

This stipulation excludes the days meant for preparations for board examinations, admission-related work, evaluation of answer scripts, planning, and teacher training. Furthermore, the directive instructs deputy district education (DDE) authorities to strictly enforce compliance before authorising any limited or local vacations for schools under their authority. In addition to complying to this rule, unaided recognised schools are urged to secure holiday approvals from their respective managements.
The directive strives to safeguard educational standards and aligns with the stated lists of gazetted, limited, and local holidays for the calendar year (January to December), in line with Section 19 of the RTE Act-2009 and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education 2023.The heads of government schools are ordered to guarantee that the stipulated 220 working days are accomplished prior to the start of the academic year and preceding holiday breaks.
