In an effort to close the gender gap in science and technology fields, the Merck Foundation, the charitable branch of Merck KGaA Germany, has been actively celebrating the 'International Day of Girls and Women in Science 2025’ in collaboration with African First Ladies, and various partners including Ministries of Health, Education, Gender & Information, and Academia across Africa. This initiative underscores the Foundation's dedication to empowering women in these sectors, where they are notably underrepresented. Senator Dr. Rasha Kelej, CEO of the Merck Foundation and lauded as the Most Influential African Woman from 2019 to 2024, has articulated the Foundation's mission to foster equal opportunities for women to excel and lead in the realms of science and technology.

The Foundation's commitment to education as a cornerstone of female empowerment is evident through its substantial contributions. By awarding over 2200 scholarships, nearly half of which have been given to women medical graduates, the Merck Foundation aims to transform patient care in Africa. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance healthcare and scientific research capabilities, particularly among women and youth, thereby promoting gender equality in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) disciplines.
Empowering African Women Through MARS Awards
A key initiative in this endeavor is the annual MARS Awards, designed to honor the 'Best African Women Researchers' and 'Best Young African Researcher'. These awards not only recognize but also aim to advance the research capabilities of women and young researchers in Africa, spotlighting their contributions to STEM fields. The recent virtual Award Ceremony, co-hosted with Africa Reproductive Care Society - ARCS, Manipal University, and African Union Scientific Technical Research Commission, celebrated African researchers for their significant contributions, particularly in women's health and reproductive & fertility care.
Supporting Girl Education and Tackling Social Issues
Furthermore, the Merck Foundation, in collaboration with African First Ladies, has launched the 2025 Edition of their annual awards for best Media work, Film, Song, and Fashion Designs that aim to support girl education and address sensitive social issues. This initiative is complimented by the release of inspiring animated films and songs by African artists to promote girl education and end child marriage. The Foundation’s “Our Africa” TV program, conceptualized and co-hosted by Senator Kelej, dedicates episodes to supporting girl education, reaching audiences across numerous African countries.
The 'Educating Linda' program, another pillar of the Merck Foundation's educational efforts, has provided scholarships for over 700 African girls. Additionally, thousands of schoolgirls have received essential school items, furthering the Foundation's mission to empower girls through education. Senator Kelej shared, "Moreover, we have benefitted thousands of girls through our awareness campaign which includes releasing many inspiring children's storybooks, animation films and songs to support girl education and end child marriage."
Call for MARS Awards 2025 Applications
The Foundation has also announced the Call for Applications for the MARS Awards 2025, inviting abstracts from African PhD students and young researchers in fields related to women's health and infertility and reproductive health. This initiative not only seeks to spotlight emerging scientific talent in Africa but also to provide winners with opportunities for further research training at prestigious institutions.
The Merck Foundation’s multifaceted approach to empowering women and girls in science, education, and health is a testament to their commitment to fostering equitable opportunities and sustainable development in Africa. Their work, in partnership with various stakeholders, highlights the pivotal role of education and empowerment in achieving gender equality in STEM fields and beyond.
Concluding, the Merck Foundation, under the leadership of Senator Dr. Rasha Kelej, continues to make significant strides in promoting women and girls' education and participation in science and technology across Africa. Through scholarships, awards, and awareness campaigns, the Foundation is paving the way for a more inclusive and equitable future in STEM fields, underscored by a strong commitment to social and health outcomes for underserved communities.
