Cisco announces second wave of layoffs in 2024, cutting thousands of jobs

Cisco is undergoing a significant transformation as it navigates the tech industry's shifting landscape. Recently, the tech giant initiated another round of job cuts, marking the second significant layoff in a year. This move, officially recorded in an August filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), is part of a broader restructuring plan aimed at boosting growth and efficiency.

Cisco announces second wave of layoffs in 2024

The restructuring focuses on consolidating Cisco's key divisions-networking, security, and collaboration-into a streamlined operation. Unfortunately, the cuts have also affected Talos Security, Cisco's renowned threat intelligence and research unit. The company plans to reduce its workforce by 7%, meaning around 5,600 employees will lose their jobs. Many employees, facing prolonged uncertainty, received formal notifications starting September 16.

Despite these turbulent changes, Cisco's CEO, Chuck Robbins, remains optimistic. He has highlighted a return to a more stable demand for Cisco's networking products. Robbins stated, "Inventory digestion is complete and we're now returning to a more normalized demand environment," a positive outlook amid the workforce reduction.

The layoffs come on the heels of a similar round of cuts in February, which saw around 4,000 positions eliminated. Reports suggest internal discontent, with one unnamed employee describing Cisco's work environment as "toxic." Yet, despite these challenges, Cisco posted nearly $54 billion in revenue for 2024, marking one of its strongest fiscal years on record. The layoffs also bring scrutiny to CEO Robbins' $32 million compensation in 2023, fueling discussions on executive pay amid workforce reductions.

Cisco's restructuring isn't limited to job cuts. The company is realigning its focus toward AI and cybersecurity. It has allocated $1 billion to AI startups and recently acquired cybersecurity firm Splunk for $28 billion. Cisco's investment in AI dates back to 2018 and includes partnerships with tech giants like Nvidia. Its efforts in cybersecurity have been bolstered by key acquisitions like Sourcefire, Open DNS, and Duo Security. The recent shift toward subscription-based services, symbolized by the Splunk deal, positions Cisco to compete with industry heavyweights in cybersecurity.

These layoffs, alongside the strategic focus on AI and cybersecurity, reflect broader trends in the tech sector. Cisco is just one of many companies making cuts, with over 27,000 jobs lost across the tech industry in August 2024 alone. Amid this transition, Cisco aims to adapt to the changing market, ensuring its future relevance by focusing on areas of high growth while managing its workforce strategically.
