Chhattisgarh to Introduce MBBS in Hindi, Announces CM Vishnu Deo Sai

On the occasion of Hindi Diwas, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai announced a significant shift in the state's medical education system. Starting from the ongoing Academic Session (2024-25), the MBBS course will now be available in Hindi.

Chhattisgarh to Introduce MBBS in Hindi

This marks a notable step toward implementing Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of offering Medical Education in Hindi, a concept he first proposed during a rally in Uttar Pradesh in 2022.

Implementation of Hindi Medium for MBBS:

Addressing the local media, Chief Minister Sai shared his government's commitment to enhancing accessibility in education. "Our government has made a major decision on Hindi Diwas. From this academic session, the MBBS course will also be taught in Hindi. Textbooks in Hindi will be introduced for the first-year students, and the health department has been directed to ensure the timely availability of these books and study materials," he stated.

This initiative is seen as part of broader efforts to transition from the colonial-era Macaulay education system, aligning with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which Chhattisgarh has fully implemented. Sai emphasized the importance of embracing indigenous languages and localized content in education.

Supporting Rural Students:

The introduction of the MBBS course in Hindi is expected to significantly benefit students from rural backgrounds, where Hindi is the primary medium of instruction. "Many students from rural areas, despite being talented, struggle with medical courses due to the English language barrier. This move will allow them to study in their native language, strengthening their foundational knowledge, deepening their understanding of complex medical concepts, and ultimately helping them become better doctors," the Chief Minister explained.

The Importance of Hindi Diwas:

The announcement coincided with Hindi Diwas, celebrated annually on September 14 to honor the day in 1949 when the Constituent Assembly designated Hindi, written in the Devanagari script, as the official language of India. This decision aimed to unify the nation linguistically while respecting its rich linguistic diversity.

By introducing medical education in Hindi, Chhattisgarh is not only celebrating the cultural significance of Hindi but also addressing practical challenges in the education system. This decision reflects the state's commitment to making education more inclusive and accessible for all, especially those from underrepresented and rural communities.
