The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced a major reform in its evaluation system by introducing on-screen (digital) marking for Class 12 board examinations from the academic session 2026-27.

CBSE to Introduce On-Screen Marking for Class 12 Board Exams from 2026-27
The notification regarding this change was issued on February 9, 2026, and schools affiliated with CBSE have been instructed to ensure technical and infrastructural readiness for smooth implementation.
CBSE conducts Class 10 and Class 12 board examinations annually across India and in 26 countries abroad, covering nearly 46 lakh students every year. Given the massive scale of assessment, the board has been steadily exploring digital solutions to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and transparency in the evaluation process.
What Is On-Screen Marking?
On-screen marking is a digital evaluation system where scanned copies of answer sheets are uploaded to a secure online platform. Examiners evaluate answers digitally using computers or tablets instead of checking physical answer books. This system has already been adopted by several national and international examination bodies and is considered a step towards modernization of assessment practices.
Class 12 to Shift First, Class 10 to Continue with Physical Evaluation
According to the CBSE notice, Class 12 answer sheets will be evaluated digitally from 2026-27, while Class 10 answer books will continue to be assessed in physical (offline) mode for the time being. The board clarified that the transition is being implemented in a phased manner to minimize disruption and allow stakeholders to adapt gradually.
Class 12 was prioritised due to the higher stakes involved, including college admissions, competitive exams, and international recognition of results.

Key Benefits of Digital Evaluation
CBSE highlighted several advantages of on-screen marking:
- Improved accuracy and uniformity in evaluation
- Faster result processing and declaration
- Reduced logistical challenges such as transportation and storage of answer books
- Enhanced security, lowering risks of loss or tampering
- Real-time monitoring and quality checks by the board
Digital marking also allows CBSE to standardise marking schemes more effectively and reduce human bias.
Instructions to Schools
CBSE has directed affiliated schools to ensure technical readiness, including:
- Adequate computer systems with updated software
- Reliable high-speed internet connectivity
- Secure examination infrastructure
- Training support for teachers who may be appointed as examiners
Schools may also be required to support scanning and digital handling processes at designated evaluation centres.
Challenges and Preparedness
While the move has been largely welcomed, experts have pointed out challenges such as examiner training, data security, and infrastructure gaps in certain regions. CBSE has assured that detailed guidelines, mock evaluations, and training modules will be rolled out well before the 2026-27 evaluation cycle to ensure a smooth transition.
A Step Towards Digital India in Education
The introduction of on-screen marking aligns with the broader goals of Digital India and the National Education Policy (NEP), which emphasise technology-driven reforms in education. CBSE's decision marks a significant shift in India's examination ecosystem and is expected to set a benchmark for other education boards in the country.
Students, parents, and schools are advised to regularly check official CBSE updates for further instructions related to the new evaluation system.
