The Union Finance Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman, unveiled a new initiative in the 2024-25 budget that provides financial support for loans up to Rs 10 lakh for higher education in domestic institutions. As part of this initiative, e-vouchers will be given directly to one lakh students annually, offering an interest subvention of 3 percent on the loan amount.

This article will provide you with the different facets of the announcement:
Skill Development Initiatives:
In addition to educational loans, the government plans to upgrade 1,000 Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) using a hub-and-spoke model. Course content will be aligned with industry skill needs, and new courses will be introduced to meet emerging demands. These measures aim to significantly enhance the skill development sector.
The Union Budget for 2024-25 allocates Rs 1.48 lakh crore towards education, employment, and skilling initiatives across the country. This substantial investment underscores the government's commitment to fostering youth development and employment opportunities.
Revised Skill Loan Scheme:
A revised skill loan scheme will facilitate loans up to Rs 7.5 lakh with a guarantee from a government-promoted fund. This measure is expected to benefit around 25,000 students each year, providing better access to financial resources for their education.
"For helping our youth who have not been eligible for any benefit under government schemes and policies, the government will provide financial support for loans up to Rs 10 lakh for higher education in domestic institutions. E-vouchers for this purpose will be given directly to one lakh students every year with an interest subvention of 3 percent of the loan amount," Sitharaman stated.
Central Scheme for Skill Development:
A new centrally sponsored scheme aims to skill 20 lakh youth over five years. This initiative is part of broader efforts to equip young people with the necessary skills to meet industry requirements and improve their employability prospects.
Sitharaman elaborated on these plans by saying, "1,000 ITIs will be upgraded in a hub-and-spoke model, course content and design will be aligned to the skill needs of industry, and new courses will be introduced for emerging needs. I am happy to announce a new centrally sponsored scheme for skill development in which 20 lakh youth will be skilled over a period of five years."
These comprehensive measures reflect a strategic approach toward enhancing educational and vocational training infrastructure in India. By aligning educational programs with industry needs and providing financial support, the government aims to create a more skilled workforce ready to meet future challenges.
