The Patna district administration has extended the closure of all government and private schools, including pre-schools, up to Class 8 till June 30, 2026, due to the ongoing heatwave and soaring temperatures across the district. The decision was taken to safeguard students from the adverse health effects caused by extreme weather conditions.

The order was issued by District Magistrate (DM) Kundan Kumar on June 28, 2026, after reviewing the prevailing weather conditions. According to the administration, the persistent heatwave poses a serious threat to the health and safety of young children, making it necessary to suspend physical academic activities for the next two days.
As per the latest directive, all academic activities for pre-school to Class 8 students in government, government-aided, and private schools across Patna district will remain suspended from June 29 to June 30, 2026. The order has been issued under the provisions of the Disaster Management Act to ensure the well-being of school-going children.
However, schools may continue administrative work or online learning activities, if deemed necessary, while ensuring students are not required to attend classes physically.
Patna and several other districts in Bihar have been witnessing extremely high daytime temperatures, accompanied by heatwave conditions over the past several days. Authorities have advised parents to keep children indoors during peak afternoon hours, encourage adequate water intake, and avoid outdoor activities until temperatures return to normal. Students are also advised to wear light clothing, consume plenty of fluids, and remain alert to symptoms of heat-related illnesses.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that heatwave conditions may persist in several parts of Bihar over the next few days. Residents have been advised to take necessary precautions and avoid unnecessary exposure to direct sunlight during the hottest hours of the day.
The Patna district administration stated that further decisions regarding the reopening of schools will be taken after reviewing the prevailing weather conditions and updated IMD forecasts. Until then, schools up to Class 8 will remain closed to ensure the safety of children.
