Many schools across India are expected to observe a holiday for Janmashtami on September 4, 2026. However, there is no single nationwide school-closure rule applicable to every institution.
The holiday may vary depending on the state and the academic calendar followed by the school. Government schools generally follow the holiday list issued by the respective state education department, while private, CBSE and ICSE schools may have their own calendars.

Why Is Janmashtami Celebrated?
Janmashtami marks the birth of Lord Krishna, who is traditionally believed to have been born at midnight on the eighth day, or Ashtami, of the Krishna Paksha in the month of Bhadrapada.
According to Hindu scriptures and tradition, Krishna was born in Mathura to Devaki and Vasudeva. His birth took place during the reign of the tyrannical king Kansa, who was Devaki's brother.
A prophecy had warned Kansa that Devaki's eighth child would become the cause of his downfall. Fearing the prophecy, Kansa imprisoned Devaki and Vasudeva. When Krishna was born, Vasudeva is believed to have carried the newborn across the Yamuna River to Gokul, where he was raised by Nanda and Yashoda.
The story of Krishna's birth and childhood forms an important part of Hindu religious tradition.
Significance of Lord Krishna
Lord Krishna occupies a central place in Hindu philosophy and mythology. He is particularly associated with the teachings of the Bhagavad Gita, in which he guides Arjuna on duty, righteousness, action and spiritual wisdom during the Mahabharata war.
Janmashtami therefore represents more than the celebration of Krishna's birth. Devotees also regard the festival as a reminder of the victory of good over evil, righteousness over injustice and hope over adversity.
How Is Janmashtami Celebrated?
Janmashtami is celebrated in different ways across India. Devotees commonly observe fasting and visit temples decorated for the occasion. Religious programmes, devotional songs, prayers and recitations are organised throughout the day.
Many devotees remain awake until midnight, which is traditionally regarded as the time of Krishna's birth. At midnight, temples and homes may conduct special prayers and rituals.
In several parts of India, especially Maharashtra, the festival is associated with Dahi Handi celebrations. Participants form human pyramids to break a pot filled with curd or other offerings, symbolising Krishna's childhood fondness for butter and curd.
Janmashtami Celebrations in Schools
Schools that remain open around Janmashtami may organise cultural activities, competitions, devotional programmes and Krishna-themed dress-up events for students.
Children may participate in activities depicting Krishna's childhood stories, including scenes involving Krishna, Radha, Yashoda and the Gopis. Such programmes help students learn about India's cultural and religious traditions.
Is September 4 a School Holiday Everywhere?
No. September 4, 2026, should not automatically be considered a holiday for every school in India.
