Bar Council inspects Delhi University law centres

New Delhi, October 15: The representatives of the Bar Council of India (BCI) Tuesday inspected the Delhi University's three law centres, after the varsity applied for inspection so that it can continue its affiliation to the council.

The inspection was required as the BCI had last month in a letter to the law faculty said that the students admitted from 2011-2012 and passing out in 2013-2014 would not be enrolled as advocates, as the university had not renewed or applied for inspection with the BCI after 2010.

BCI is the statutory body which regulates all law courses in the country. "Now that the inspection has happened, all those from the batch of 2014 whose degrees were withheld must now be registered," said Ashwani Kumar Bansal, dean, DU law faculty.

After the inspection the office bearers of Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) also submitted a memorandum to the BCI highlighting the problem of infrastructure in the law centres. "The law faculty lacks basic infrastructure like canteen and even drinking water so the BCI needed to take stock of these situation," said, Rohit Chahal, national secretary, Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad. The DU law faculty admits over 2,000 students every year.
