The Union Education Ministry has introduced guidelines for bagless days in classes 6-8, aiming to make school learning more enjoyable and stress-free. These guidelines were developed by the PSS Central Institute of Vocational Education, part of NCERT, and released on the fourth anniversary of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

According to the guidelines, students will experience a 10-day bagless period during which they will intern with local vocational experts like carpenters and gardeners. This initiative is designed to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical skills, helping students explore potential career paths.
Vocational Craft Courses
During these bagless days, students will engage in hands-on courses covering various vocational crafts such as carpentry, electric work, metal work, gardening, and pottery making. These activities will be tailored to local skilling needs as determined by states and communities.

The ministry suggests that these activities can be scheduled in multiple slots throughout the academic year. It is recommended to have two or three slots for better integration into the annual calendar. Teachers from all subjects should participate in planning these activities, which may combine indoor and outdoor tasks within a single day.
Recommended Activities
The NCERT guidelines propose several activities for these bagless days. These include visiting vegetable markets, charity visits, pet care surveys and reports, doodling, kite making and flying, organising book fairs, sitting under a banyan tree, and visiting biogas plants and solar energy parks.

In addition to the bagless days initiative, other projects were launched on the NEP anniversary. These include dedicated TV channels for learning Indian languages; a Tamil channel; primers for early graders in 25 Indian languages; career guidance guidelines; National Mission for Mentoring; National Professional Standards for Teachers in braille and audiobooks; a school innovation marathon by AICTE; and a book on graduation attributes and professional competencies.
NEP's Transformative Journey
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan highlighted NEP's transformative impact over four years. He stated that NEP 2020 aims to nurture a new generation of learners by transforming the education system. "The four-year journey of NEP 2020 has been about bringing in transformative change in the country's education system for nurturing a new generation of learners," he said.
"Implementation of NEP has made learning more vibrant and guided in making the country's education more futuristic, rooted, global and outcome-oriented," Pradhan added. The Akhil Bharatiya Siksha Samagam event was also conceptualised to celebrate NEP's adoption and reinvigorate stakeholders' commitment to its effective implementation.
This initiative reflects India's commitment to enhancing its educational landscape by integrating practical skills with traditional learning methods. By doing so, it aims to empower students with diverse skills that are essential for their future careers while making learning an enjoyable experience.
