Uzbekistan to give admission to 2000 Ukraine-returned Indian medical students

In a big relief to Ukraine-returned Indian medical students facing an uncertain future, the government of Uzbekistan has provided a helping hand.

Uzbekistan is ready to give admission to some 2000 such students in its medical colleges. Students - facing an uncertain future until now - can now resume and complete their studies in Uzbekistan. Just so you know, about 250 students have already been admitted to 2 colleges in Uzbekistan namely the Bukhar State Medical Institute and the Tashkent Medical Academy.

Indian Students of Ukraine to study in Uzbekistan

The decision has been taken at the request of the Indian government to the government of Uzbekistan. Uzbekistan, like Ukraine, was part of the erstwhile Soviet Union and thus has a more-or-less similar curriculum, fees, and academic culture. Moreover, the Uzbek ambassador to India - Dilshod Akhatov - has also promised Indian students an affordable and comfortable stay in his country with Indian food on offer.

Students of all years - from the first to final year into their course in Ukraine - can avail of this opportunity. However, they will have to fulfil some norms to be eligible for admission to the colleges of Uzbekistan. These norms are the Screening test regulations 2002 of the National Medical Commission (NMC) and the Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate (FMGL) Regulations 2021.

Moreover, they will have to pass the interview organized by the concerned medical college. For instance, the recently admitted 250 Ukraine-returned students cleared the interview organized by Bukhar State Medical Institute and Tashkent Medical Academy.

Do Indian students go to Uzbekistan for Medical degrees?

Though not a medical destination as popular as Ukraine, some 500 Indian students were already studying there. The number is now slated to increase manifold after this decision. Currently, they are offering two undergraduate medical programs to Indians:

  • 6 years MD Diploma and
  • 5+1 years MBBS Degree with one-year Internship

As mentioned earlier, due to the similarity in the academic system of Ukraine and Uzbekistan, Students are less likely to encounter any problematic changes.
