32nd convocation of Mangalore University awards 112 PhDs, 60 ranks

Mangalore University awarded 12 PhDs, 60 ranks at its 32nd convocation held on Monday.

 

"Consistency in studies and support of parents and teachers helped me to get two gold medals and five cash prizes at the 32nd convocation of Mangalore University here on Monday," said Shanthi Shenoy, a student of history.

She is currently working as a guest faculty at Dr G Shankar Government Women's First Grade College, Ajjarakad. She has won the late Dr Paduru Gururaja Bhat Memorial gold medal, late Dr Gururaj Bhat gold medal, Pasantha S Ananthanarayana and Prof S Ananthanarayana cash prize, Aubreay D'Souza Charitable Foundation Prize, Dr P Gururaja Bhat Memorial Cash Prize, Dr M V Shetty Memorial Cash Prize and Prof B Sheik Ali Felicitation Committee Cash Prize.

"After completing my degree, it was my lecturer Suresh Rai who pursuaded me to continue my post graduation in History. My parents Dinakar Shenoy and Jyothi Shenoy are self-employed and have been engaged in selling happala and sendige. My parents have been supporting me continuously. The fee at the government college was affordable for me to pursue my studies. My elder sister has completed DEd and my younger brother is pursuing CA. I want to continue pursue Ph D," she said.

On the contrary, Shreyanka S Ranade has won 1 gold medal and 5 prizes in Kannada. He secured the golden jubilee Kannada Film Festival Memorial cash prize, Pervai Subbaiah Shetty Memorial cash prize, Dharmasthala Rathnavarma Heggade Memorial gold medal, Kerody Subba Rao memorial cash prize, the cash prize in honour of Dr B Damodar Rao and late B N Gupta Trustee Janmabhoomi Press Trust Memorial cash prize.

112 Ph Ds:

14 students of St Ann's College of Education received Ph D degrees during the convocation. These students are among the 20 who had registered for their Ph D programmes in 2008. 5 students have submitted their thesis already to the University and are waiting for the results.

The students had taken up research in interdisciplinary studies, music education and achievements in education.

112 Doctor of Philosophy degrees were awarded by the University (Arts - 20, Science - 68, Commerce - 8 and Education - 1), 38 gold medals, 65 cash prizes. In summation, there were 60 ranks (PG - 42, UG - 18: Arts - 13, Science and Technology - 29, Commerce -10, Law -1, Education - 5 and PG diploma - 2).

1,059 students were awarded their degrees in person.

PhD at 79:

The oldest person to receive the Ph D degree from Vice Chancellor Prof T C Shivashankaramurthy at the convocation was Krishnananda Hegde.

"The influence of ancient Indian healing arts on modern medicine," his thesis was made under the directions and supervision of Dr K M Lokesh of Mangalore University. "I wanted to carry out academic research. Myself and my guide used have a good discussions on the subject. Though my previous books were based on research, the methodology was self-taught," Hegde said.

He is considered to be one among the oldest persons in the country to receive a degree from an Indian university.

Hegde said that his viva voce with professors from Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi, went on well. He added, "Research helped me to keep my mind active."

46 years after a master's degree was awarded by the Karnatak University, Hegde gets the doctorate degree now. He was an officer at Indian Information Service. 20 years ago, Hegde retired from All India Radio, New Delhi as the Joint Director of News.

His academic career as a professor in Manipal University and T A Pai Management Institute, Manipal began after he retired from the AIR. Presently, he is the Managing Editor of an international medical quarterly, Journal of the Science of Healing Outcomes, which is being published from Mangalore.

‘History of Bunts,' ‘A New Look at Classical Greece,' ‘Bhagavad Gita: The Dialogue' and 'Voices at Dusk' are some of the books amongst the 9 books he has written.
