UPSC CSAT Syllabus: Paper-II (Qualifying)
The CSAT paper is objective-type, carrying 200 marks with a duration of 2 hours. It is generally considered of moderate difficulty, but effective preparation is key.

The UPSC CSAT syllabus includes:

  • Comprehension: Reading passages and questions to test understanding
  • Interpersonal Skills: Communication and logical interpretation

Note: CSAT is qualifying in nature (only requiring a minimum of 33% marks) and does not count in the final merit ranking. However, failing to score the minimum can disqualify a candidate fro moving forward.

CSAT Marks & Cut-off

  • Total Marks: 200
  • Minimum Qualifying: 33% (Approx. 66 marks)
  • No negative marking applies in CSAT (unlike Prelims Paper-I)

UPSC CSAT Qualifying Strategy

Since CSAT is qualifying, the focus should be on accuracy and speed to ensure the 33% threshold is comfortably achieved. Here's how:

1. Understand the Question Pattern
Begin with analysing past years' papers to identify frequently tested concepts and question styles.

  • Read editorials, articles and practice passage-based questions
  • Focus on understanding the core idea, not just scanning

3. Master Basics of Reasoning

  • Practice logical puzzles, analogies, and sequence-based questions
  • Use sectional books or online test series for targeted practice

4. Sharpen Numeracy Skills

  • Revise basic mathematics (percentages, ratios, averages)
  • Use short tricks for faster calculations

5. Data Interpretation Practice

  • Regularly solve graph, chart, and table-based questions
  • Time yourself to improve speed and accuracy

6. Take Mock Tests

  • Regular mock tests help build time management
  • Analyse mistakes immediately to avoid repetition

Time Management Tips

  • Allocate fixed hours daily for CSAT practice
  • Balance CSAT preparation alongside Prelims Paper-I syllabus
  • Focus on weaker areas without ignoring strengths

Final Word
