World post office day is observed every year on 9 October. This day is celebrated for the vintage medium to highlight the importance of postal services in everyday lives of people and businesses, as well as its contribution to global social and economic development.

Post Office Day: History

October 9 was selected as the day as this was the date in 1874 when the Union Postal Service was established in Switzerland. Universal Postal Union is credited for starting the global communication revolution which introduced the ability to write to others all over the world. Later in 1969, October 9 was declared as World Post Day at the Congress in Tokyo after Anand Mohan Narula, a member of the Indian delegation, submitted a proposal in this regard.

Postal networks provide some 1.5 billion people worldwide with access to basic financial services (payments, money transfers and savings). The global postal market has grown from just under 450 billion USD in 2018 to over 500 billion USD in 2020.
With a network comprising more than 650,000 offices and 5.3 million staff globally, and a public service mandate from many governments, the Post is unparalleled in its ability to deliver services to anyone, anywhere.

World Post Office Day: Celebration

On this day, members of the Universal Postal Union are encouraged to organise activities to celebrate the day, including everything from the promotion or introduction of new postal products and services, to the organisation of open days at post offices, mail centres and postal museums.
Some countries mark the day by holding special stamp collection exhibitions, there are also places where workshops on postal history are conducted.

  • 225 B.C.-Oldest Piece of Mail Sent- Example of an official post comes from third century B.C. Egypt
  • 1840-Postage Stamp Invented- Englishman Sir Rowland Hill introduces the world's first postage stamp
  • September 15, 1874- First Postal Conference Hosted-Representatives from 22 nations gather in Bern, Switzerland, to plan for an international postal union
  • October 9, 1874- Treaty of Bern Held-The General Postal Union is established - later to be called the Universal Postal Union
  • 1969-World Post Day Established-The Universal Postal Congress in Tokyo establishes World Post Day.

World Post Office Day: Significance

  • The purpose of World Post Office Day is to create awareness of the role of the postal sector in people's and businesses' everyday lives and its contribution to the social and economic development of countries. The post day celebration encourages member countries to undertake programme activities aimed at generating a broader awareness of their Post's role and activities among the public and media on a national scale.
  • Every year, more than 150 countries celebrate World Post Office Day in a number of ways. In few countries, World Post Day is observed as a working holiday. Many Posts use the event to introduce or promote new postal products and services.
  • Some Post offices also use World Post Day to reward their employees for excellent service.
  • For countries participating in Universal Postal Union International Letter-Writing Competition, national winners are often honoured on 9 October.
