Martyr's Day 2023: One of the most inspiring and radical thinkers of Indian independence, Bhagat Singh once stated,
"They may kill me, but they cannot kill my ideas,
They may crush my body,
But they will not be able to crush my spirit."
The aforesaid statement of Bhagat Singh is still relevant, even after 75 years of Independence. The Indian Freedom Fighters, Bhagat Singh, Shivaram Rajguru, and Sukhdev Thapar played an inevitable role in the journey of freedom of India from British rule. The British authorities executed revolutionary freedom fighters Bhagat Singh, Shivaram Rajguru, and Sukhdev Thapar for their actions on March 23, 1931, at the Lahore Prison.

In India, this day is celebrated as "Martyrs' Day". Martyr's Day also falls on
30th January:- On January 30, Martyrs' Day is observed across the country to commemorate Nathuram Godse's killing of Mahatma Gandhi in 1948.
15th February:- In 2022, the Bihar Government designated February 15 as Martyrs' Day (Shahid Diwas) in honor of the 34 protesters who were slain by police in Tarapur on that date in 1932.
23rd March:- It is recognized as Martyrs' Day on the anniversary of the killings of Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev Thapar, and Shivaram Rajguru on March 23, 1931, in Lahore.
Know the Timeline Behind the Death of the Trio:
Bhagat Singh and his allies promised to avenge the death of national leader Lala Lajpat Rai, who passed away from a heart attack in November 1928 after being violently lathi-charged by the Superintendent of Police James A. Scott.
In a case of mistaken identity, Singh and Rajguru shot and killed John Saunders, an assistant superintendent of police in Lahore. Yet they asserted that Lala Lajpat Rai's killing had been exacted revenge.
Chandrashekhar Azad shot Chanan Singh, a police officer who was pursuing Singh and Rajguru, as they ran. For several months, the young rebels were on the run.
They were all participants in the revolutionary actions of the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association. They thought that the only way to end colonial authority was through an armed uprising. To protest an unfair bill, Bhagat Singh and Batukeshwar Dutt detonated two bombs inside the Central Legislative Assembly in Delhi in April 1929. They merely wanted to raise awareness of their battle, not hurt anyone.
'Inquilab Zindabad' was chanted as the two pleaded their case to be arrested rather than flee the chaotic situation. Singh and Dutt were sentenced to life in prison.
Rajguru and other revolutionaries were detained in a bomb factory near Lahore. The revolutionaries were subsequently connected to the Saunders murder case by the police. They brought charges against Singh, Rajguru, Sukhdev, and others.
Rajguru and other revolutionaries were taken into custody in a bomb factory in Lahore. The revolutionaries were then connected to the Saunders murder case by the police. In this case, charges were brought against Singh, Rajguru, Sukhdev, and others.
The revolutionaries began a hunger strike inside the prison to demand better facilities and care. They desired to be regarded as political detainees. A number of political figures, including Jawaharlal Nehru, met with the revolutionaries.
He remarked, "I was very much pained to see the distress of the heroes. They have staked their lives in this struggle. They want that political prisoners should be treated as political prisoners. I am quite hopeful that their sacrifice would be crowned with success." After 116 days, Bhagat Singh finally ended his fast.

The young men's trial received an abundance of media coverage in the nation. Singh, Rajguru, and Sukhdev were handed death sentences on October 7, 1930, while other defendants received prison terms and expulsion orders.
Many persons vehemently opposed the death penalty. The government was urged by national leaders to commute the sentence to life in prison. The sentence was rejected by the Communist Party of Great Britain as well.
The three were scheduled to be executed on March 24, 1931, but the Lahore Prison carried out the sentence the previous day. Their mortal remains were secretly burned after the hanging.
The administration faced intense criticism for the heroes' executions. The three young men were truly martyrs who welcomed death and did not really even fear it.
Never shall their bravery and ultimate sacrifice for the sake of the homeland be forgotten.
In India, March 23rd is recognized as "Martyrs' Day," "Shaheed Diwas," or "Sarvodaya Day" in honor of the invincible warriors.
