International Day of Happiness; History, Significance and more

It's a day dedicated to joy, naturally! Happiness stands as a fundamental human objective. Acknowledging this, the United Nations General Assembly advocates for "a more inclusive, equitable, and balanced approach to economic growth that fosters the happiness and well-being of all peoples."

International Day of Happiness

Governments and international organizations are encouraged to invest in conditions conducive to happiness, upholding human rights and integrating well-being and environmental considerations into policy frameworks, such as the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. The efficacy of governments in maintaining peace and social order, as well as in areas like taxation, legal institutions, and the provision of public services, strongly correlates with average life satisfaction.

The United Nations extends an invitation to every individual, regardless of age, as well as to every classroom, business, and government entity, to partake in celebrating the International Day of Happiness.

History

In 2012, the United Nations officially designated March 20th as the International Day of Happiness, recognizing the vital role of happiness and well-being in advancing sustainable development and fostering global peace. The inaugural celebration took place in 2013, evolving into a worldwide movement engaging millions of individuals in activities aimed at promoting happiness and well-being.

The International Day of Happiness is rooted in the belief that happiness is an inherent human entitlement, and that advocating for happiness and well-being can contribute to a more harmonious, fair, and sustainable planet. It serves as a day to commemorate the transformative influence of happiness on lives and its potential to enhance the world for all.

Significance

"It's a day to be happy, of course! Happiness is a fundamental human goal. The United Nations General Assembly recognizes this goal and calls for 'a more inclusive, equitable, and balanced approach to economic growth that promotes the happiness and well-being of all peoples,'" stated the United Nations on their official website. The International Day of Happiness seeks to acknowledge the importance of happiness in setting goals and aspirations for individuals, motivating them to strive for a better life. It also advocates for sustainable development, overall well-being, and the eradication of poverty.

Traditions of the Day

Given the subjective nature of happiness and the diversity of factors that contribute to individual happiness, there are no fixed traditions associated with this day. Happiness is a deeply personal experience, and individuals are encouraged to pursue whatever brings them joy and contentment. Authentic happiness involves being true to oneself and embracing experiences that resonate with personal fulfillment. Cultivating internal happiness fosters a sense of satisfaction with one's surroundings, encouraging individuals to embrace new encounters and connections. Embracing gratitude for the present moment and cherishing life's small pleasures are also emphasized as integral aspects of celebrating the International Day of Happiness.
