Global Population reaches 8 billion: India adds 177 million - the largest - in the last one billion

The world population reached 8 billion on Nov 15, 2022, and India has contributed 177 million to help it reach 8 billion from 7.

The good news however is that the population growth appears to be stabilising, indicating that the country's national policies and health systems, including access to family planning services, are working.

The Total Fertility Rate - more or less the average number of children born per woman - has declined from 2.2 to 2.0 at the national level," the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) said. However, it usually takes a generation for it to reflect in the real-time data. We can expect our population to stagnate by 2050.

Why Fertility Rate of 2.1 is important

To have a static population (neither growing nor declining), a fertility rate of 2.1 is required. Anything more and your population growth skyrockets, and anything less and your population start to decline.

India: the most populous country on the planet by 2023

As per the World Population Prospects 2022 (released in July), India's population stands at 1.412 billion in 2022, compared with China's 1.426 billion.

India's population is expected to surpass China in 2023, and grow to 1.7 billion by 2050 - after that, it will begin to fall.

The Chinese population could fall from 1.4 billion today to 1.3 billion by 2050, and to only 800 million by 2100.The Rise of Nigeria

Surprisingly, Nigeria will emerge as the 3rd most populous country in the World by 2050 - along with the US.

The population of both will hover around 375

millionWhen will the World Population decline?

The global population could grow to around 8.5 billion in 2030, 9.7 billion in 2050 and 10.4 billion in 2080. It will remain stagnant at 10.4 billion till 2100 - afterwards, it will start going down

Declining Mortality Rate

Population growth is caused in part by declining levels of mortality, as reflected in increased levels of life expectancy at birth. Globally, life expectancy reached 72.8 years in 2019, an increase of almost 9 years since 1990. Further reductions in mortality are projected to result in average longevity of around 77.2 years globally in 2050.

Mortality (Deaths) plays a vital role in keeping a check on the overall population. If fewer people die in a given period, even if the number of children born is kept constant, the population ultimately grows. Why Population is growing?

Disadvantages of Population Growth

Uncontrolled population growth is very resource draining and it presents challenges to the achievement of sustainable development goals.

Which Countries are contributing most to population growth?

If the global population between 2022-50 grows by 100, More than half of that (which is 50) will be contributed by just 8 out of the total 200 countries in the world. India is one of the culprits.

The other seven are: the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines, and Tanzania

More Poverty More Population

The 46 least developed countries (LDCs) are among the world's fastest-growing. Many are projected to double their population between 2022 and 2050, putting additional pressure on resources and posing challenges to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The world is getting older

The global median age which is only 30 years now in 2022, is projected to rise to 41.9 years by 2100.

The share of the global population aged 65 years or above is projected to rise from 10 per cent in 2022 to 16 percent in 2050.

Countries with a declining population

Japan and some east European countries such as Bulgaria, Romania, Ukraine, Greece, Poland etc. Then there are developed countries like Germany which can reverse its declining population by taking in migrants.

Why their Population is declining?

The populations of 61 countries/Areas are projected to decrease by 1 per cent or more between 2022 and 2050, owing to sustained low levels of fertility and, in some cases, high rates of outward migration.

UN Report: Population is rising, but the growth rate is falling

It took about 12 years for the world population to grow from 7 to 8 billion, but the next billion is expected to take about 14.5 years (by 2037), reflecting the slowdown in global growth.

India VS China population projection

India is projected to have a population of 1.668 billion in 2050, ahead of China's 1.317 billion. China is expected to experience an absolute decline in its population as early as 2023, the UN report said.

Growing India, Declining China: At least in terms of population

It might come as a surprise for a few, but China's population might be declining even as I write and you read. The UN report states that it is expected to experience an absolute decline in its population as early as 2023. You know who to blame for this: China's "one-child policy."

Not only the population is declining, but China is also struggling with an ageing population. The population of people over 60 years in China is projected to reach 28 per cent (40 crores) by 2040.

India on average is 10 years younger than China. Our median age is just 28.7 - 10 years less than China's 38.4. Japan - known as the country of old - has a median age of 48.6 years.

India: A Youthful Nation

No country in the world has as many youths as India. With most of the world - especially the developed part - ageing, our youthful population can provide global resources and solutions to solve global problems. We have the opportunity to cash in on our demographic dividend and put the nation on the development path.

68 per cent of India's population is between 15-64 years old in 2022. People in this age group is considered to be the working and earning population and that's why this data matter.
As for oldies - considered a liability, just 7% of our population is aged above 65. Rest 25% of our population is below 15 years of age.

Why Ageing population is bad?

When you have an ageing population like Japan and now China, you increasingly have fewer people who work (15-64 age group) and more people who are dependent on them (people over 65).
