World Wetland Day 2024

World Wetlands Day 2024 serves as a global initiative to acknowledge the importance of wetlands, encompassing diverse habitats such as marshes, swamps, bogs, and mangroves. These ecosystems play a pivotal role in preserving water quality, supporting biodiversity, mitigating climate change, and providing livelihoods for millions of people across the globe.

When is World Wetland Day?

The annual celebration of World Wetlands Day on February 2nd commemorates the adoption of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands in 1971. This international treaty is dedicated to the conservation and sustainable use of wetlands worldwide.

History of World Wetland Day

While wetlands make up a mere six percent of the Earth's surface, they harbor an astonishing forty percent of the world's animal and plant species, serving as crucial habitats for breeding and sustenance. The Ramsar Convention, named after the Iranian city of Ramsar, emerged as an international treaty dedicated to the preservation of wetlands. This significant agreement was officially signed on February 2, 1971, and since then, the world has observed February 2 as World Wetlands Day. Notably, on August 30, 2021, the UN General Assembly adopted Resolution 75/317, officially designating February 2 as World Wetlands Day.

Importance of World Wetland Day

Wetlands play a pivotal role in flood control, water purification, and water regulation. Despite their essential functions, wetlands are disappearing at a rate three times faster than forests. Human activities, including drainage, pollution, overfishing, and the overexploitation of natural resources, contribute significantly to the endangerment of wetlands. On this day, it is imperative to commit to taking necessary measures to safeguard wetlands, ensuring their continued thriving and contribution to a healthier planet. The theme for this year is "Wetlands and Human Wellbeing."
