The purpose of World Book and Copyright Day is to encourage people to read and love books. Every year on April 23, people celebrate the importance of books as a link between the past and the present, a bridge across generations, and a link across cultures. To maintain the momentum of the Day's celebrations through its own efforts, UNESCO and the worldwide organisations that represent the three primary sectors of the book industry-publishers, booksellers, and libraries-select the World Book Capital for a year.
The 23rd of April is a symbolic date in world literature. On this day, numerous well-known authors passed away, including Inca Garcilaso de la Vega, Miguel de Cervantes, and William Shakespeare. This day was a logical option for UNESCO's General Conference, which was convened in Paris in 1995, to honour books and authors globally and promote access to books.

UNESCO's theme for 2023 is Indigenous Languages!
The International Decade of Indigenous Languages (2022-32) began last year, and it is a UN objective to maintain and encourage linguistic diversity and multilingualism. The World Book Capital Network Charter includes references to indigenous and regional languages and acknowledges a less rigorous definition of "the book" by recognising a variety of literary genres, including oral traditions. On April 23, when the world celebrates World Book and Copyright Day, UNESCO will emphasise the importance of indigenous languages.
The bulk of the almost 7,000 languages still in use-many of which are rapidly vanishing-are spoken by indigenous peoples who account for the lion's share of global cultural variety. The UN has no constraints on which cultures or peoples can be considered indigenous, however many of you will be familiar with indigenous populations that are either from your own nation, live there, or are among the people you have worked with abroad.
History of the World Book and Copyright Day
In honour of the great authors who passed away on April 23rd, including William Shakespeare, Miguel Cervantes, and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega, UNESCO has designated that day as World Book Day. The UNESCO General Conference, which was convened in Paris in 1995, decided on this date to recognise and pay homage to writers and books all across the world.
Significance of World Book and Copyright Day
On this day, books and authors are honoured around the world, and people are also urged to discover the joy of reading. Respect will grow for people who have made priceless contributions to societal and cultural advancement as a result. Awarded is the UNESCO Prize for Children's and Young People's Literature Advancing Tolerance. Additionally, this day will improve public understanding of copyright laws and other steps to safeguard intellectual property.
What is Copyright?
It is a legal concept that has been adopted by the majority of governments and grants exclusive rights to writers or producers of creative work, usually for a set period of time. Essentially, it is the right to copy. Additionally, it grants the owner of the copyright the right to be acknowledged for the work and other connected rights. Therefore, it is a sort of intellectual property.
