History of Indian Coast Guard Day

National Coast Guard Day, observed on February 1st each year, marks the inception of the coastal force. In the 1960s, the Indian Navy recognized the necessity for a specialized force capable of handling smuggling, search and rescue operations, and coastal security. Deploying navy officials alone for such tasks was deemed insufficient. In the 1970s, the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea underscored the requirement for a dedicated coastal guard to safeguard the Exclusive Economic Zone and counter smuggling activities.

In 1972, the Nag Committee proposed the establishment of the Indian Coast Guard. On February 1, 1977, the ICG was inaugurated with the transfer of 7 ships from the Indian Navy. The Parliament of India officially sanctioned the formation of the ICG on August 18, 1978, designating February 1 as Indian Coast Guard Day.
