According to Hindu religious belief, Lord Vishwakarma, the world's creator, built Dwarka, where Lord Krishna ruled. Sthapatya Veda, the science of architecture and mechanics, is also credited to him.

Lord Vishwakarma, the son of Vastu Dev and Goddess Angisri, is also believed to have built Ravana's Pushpak Vimana, Lord Shiva's Trishul, Indra's Vajra (thunderbolt), the Pandavas' Maya Sabha, and Lord Vishnu's Sudarshana Chakra, according to legends. He is also credited for building the famous Jagannath temple in Puri.

Shops, factories, and industries are the main observers of the festival. On this day, factory and industrial workers pray to Lord Vishwakarma for the safety of their livelihoods and worship their tools. On the day of Vishwakarma Puja, they pray for the flawless operation of equipment and refrain from using their tools.

Pictures and special statues of Lord Vishwakarma are put at factories and workplaces on this occasion.

The day is primarily observed in states such as West Bengal, Assam, Odisha, Tripura, Bihar, and Jharkhand in the eastern region of the country. Nepal, India's neighbour, also observes Vishwakarma Puja. There will be no grand celebrations this year due to the ongoing coronavirus outbreak.
