History of RA Awareness Day

The term "rheumatoid arthritis" was coined in 1858 by Alfred B. Garrod to differentiate it from osteoarthritis and alleviate confusion. In the past, traditional remedies like leaching and bloodletting were employed, and medications containing heavy metals began showing promise. It wasn't until 1949 that painkillers became widely accessible.
Around 1988, methotrexate treatments emerged as an option, but for some, the condition might relapse after a few months or weeks of remission.

In 2011, a group of patients established the Rheumatoid Patient Foundation with the objective of increasing awareness about the disease and available treatments. Subsequently, in 2013, the foundation initiated Rheumatoid Awareness Day to disseminate information and debunk misconceptions surrounding the condition. This dedicated day plays a crucial role in enhancing people's understanding of rheumatoid arthritis and its effective management.
