National Safety Day: Helping Promote Well-Being of Industrial Workers

The National Safety Day is observed in India every year on March 4. The main aim of this day is to spread the awareness of the safety measures throughout the country and make sure that people follow that while they are at their workplace. By following the prescribed safety norms, the workers can avoid accidents at the workplace.

Initiative by Ministry of Labour and Employment to Provide Safe Working Conditions

The Government of India's Ministry of Labour and Employment organized the first Conference on Industrial Safety in 1965. The conference was held in cooperation with employers' organisations, state governments and other trade unions and institutions from December 11 to December 13. It was during the conference that these organizations realized the importance of setting up of national and state safety councils.

At the 24th session of the Standing Labour Committee in February 1966, the proposal for a National Safety Council (NSC) of India was accepted. Thus, on March 4, 1966, the Ministry of Labour and Employment constituted the National Safety Council of India. The NSC was first registered as a society under the Societies Registration Act, 1860, and further as a public trust under the Bombay Public Trust Act, 1950.

To celebrate the foundation of the National Safety Council as well as to raise safety awareness, the National Safety Day was first marked in 1971.

The theme for 2023 National Safety Day is 'Our Aim - Zero Harm'.

The National Safety Day strives to promote safe working environment for workers. It raises awareness regarding safety measures and procedures to be followed to avoid any mishap.

Opportunity for Safe, Health and Environment Movement

The National Safety Day provides us an opportunity wherein we can showcase the importance of various safety measures and precautions in preventing any unfortunate mishaps. The day also marks the greater involvement of the Safe, Health and Environment movement. The day brings together industry leaders from various sectors to provide their valuable inputs for spreading awareness regarding the safety movement.

The movement aims to promote and remind employers and concerned authorities that they must ensure that employees in their organizations are working under strict safety norms and adequate measures are implemented to provide a safer workplace.

Training, Response and Prevention

The main objective of National Safety Day is to spread the culture of safety and ensure safer workplace to employees that will eventually help to promote well-being of workers. A culture of safety brings with it values and beliefs that bring importance to safety aspect in a worker's life. The implementation of safety measures helps to avoid accidents mainly in the industrial sector.

The National Safety Day also provides individual workers with training on safety measures to be followed while faced with hazardous and critical situations. Individuals are educated on measures to be taken and prevention methods to be employed while responding to emergency situations.

National Safety Week, March 4 to March 10

In 2023, the National Safety Day marks the 52nd year of its foundation. The day is celebrated across industries, departments and NGOs. The primary goal is to protect and serve workers and inculcate a culture of scientific thinking in the society.

Also, this day marks the beginning of National Safety Week in India. This annual celebration that started as a one-day programme is now extended as a week-long celebration, starting on March 4 and continuing till March 10.
