History of National Horse Day

Since 2004, the Day of the Horse has been observed. People from all around the world gather to honour this animal and reflect on the role horses have played in shaping our country into what they are today. Horses serve a broad and significant part in our society, from thoughtful equestrian therapy to delivering supplies and food in rural regions and assisting with ploughing fields, and we must respect this.

While we're talking about history, we should emphasise that horses have been around for almost 50 million years. Horses first appeared in North America, then expanded to Europe and Asia. Horses that fled North America went extinct around 10,000 years ago. Colonising Europeans then introduced them. According to Oklahoma State University, the first horses to be tamed are estimated to have been in Asia between 3000 and 4000 BC. Horses were mostly employed for meat and milk back then. However, they eventually joined oxen as a type of animal used for transportation.

What is the significance of National Horse Day?

Horses assist the US economy to the tune of $9.2 billion. Horses have assimilated into American culture in a variety of ways, including assisting in field ploughs, transporting food and supplies into rural regions, moving cattle in ranches, and just providing kind, considerate horse therapy. Horses are still used for labour in many remote rural regions, and rodeos are an essential and treasured element of American Western culture.

How to Celebrate National Horse Day?

Everyone can celebrate National Horse Day, whether you are an equestrian who enjoys riding, an equine specialist and enthusiast, or simply someone who enjoys horses. If you have a horse, spend some time with it today to enhance your attachment. Go for a long trail ride, maybe even a hack. If your horse enjoys it, give it a thorough grooming. You may even treat it to a new halter or bridle browband. Invite folks who don't regularly get to engage with horses to your horse stables. Consider donating your time to horse-related organisations such as rescues and therapeutic riding schools. You could also send money to horse-related charities. Treat yourself to a horse-themed day by watching a horse movie like "Seabiscuit" or "Secretariat".
