The day is marked to honour former Bengal Chief Minister Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy's birth and death anniversaries. The day is devoted to all the doctors and healthcare workers who risk their lives to serve the people. History Of National Doctors' Day 2021

Dr. BC Roy who was born on July 1, 1882, and died on July 1, 1962, was a prominent doctor who made significant contributions to the medical world. The Doctors' Day was first marked in 1991 to honour former Bengal Chief Minister Dr. BC Roy for his contributions to humanity.

On February 4, 1961, he was also bestowed the honour of Bharat Ratna. He established several medical institutions in Bengal such as Jadavpur T.B. Hospital, Chittaranjan Seva Sadan, Kamala Nehru Memorial Hospital, Victoria Institution (college), Chittaranjan Cancer Hospital, and Chittaranjan Seva Sadan for women and children. According to the British Medical Journal, he was the first medical consultant in the Indian subcontinent, towering over his contemporaries in various fields.

Significance Of National Doctors' Day 2021

The aim of observing National Doctor's Day is to draw attention to the role and duties of medical professionals in saving lives. The purpose of the day is to recognise their roles and responsibilities.

During the Covid-19 outbreak, when the number of cases rose tremendously, doctors have been working around the clock, risking their lives in order to save as many lives as possible. Instead of worrying about their own and their families safety, they decided to serve the country. They worked tirelessly in the hour of crisis.
