Kargil Vijay Diwas 2025: Remembering India’s Bravehearts of the 1999 Kargil War

Kargil Vijay Diwas is observed every year on 26th July in India to commemorate the victory of the Indian Armed Forces over the Pakistani Army during the Kargil War of 1999.

It is a day of remembrance, pride, and tribute to the bravery, valor, and sacrifice of India's soldiers who successfully repelled the intrusion in the Kargil sector of Jammu and Kashmir.

Why is Kargil Vijay Diwas Celebrated?

The day marks the conclusion of "Operation Vijay", launched by India to evict Pakistani infiltrators and regain control of strategic peaks in the Kargil region of Ladakh (then part of Jammu & Kashmir). The war lasted for over 60 days, from May to July 1999, in extremely difficult mountainous terrain, and ended with India successfully recapturing its posts on July 26, 1999.

Historical Context

In early 1999, Pakistani soldiers and militants crossed the Line of Control (LoC) and occupied high-altitude positions in Indian territory.

Disguised as insurgents, the intruders took control of key vantage points, posing a serious threat to National Highway 1D, a lifeline to Ladakh.

The infiltration was detected in May 1999, prompting the Indian Army to launch Operation Vijay to clear the sector.

Operation Vijay & India's Response

The Indian response was swift, coordinated, and fierce.

With support from the Indian Air Force (Operation Safed Sagar) and strategic ground troops, India launched a full-scale offensive to reclaim the peaks.

Despite the altitude, harsh weather, and well-entrenched enemies, Indian forces displayed unmatched courage and determination.

Units like the 13 JAK Rifles, 18 Grenadiers, Naga Regiment, and Gorkha Rifles were at the forefront of the assault.

Heroes of the Kargil War

Several soldiers laid down their lives in the line of duty. Among the most revered are:

• Captain Vikram Batra (Param Vir Chakra) - Known for his bravery in capturing Point 4875.

• Rifleman Sanjay Kumar (PVC) - For exceptional courage and solo charge.

• Grenadier Yogendra Singh Yadav (PVC) - Climbed vertical cliffs and fought despite injuries.

• Major Rajesh Singh Adhikari, Captain Anuj Nayyar, and many others are remembered for their gallantry.

Observance of Kargil Vijay Diwas

• The main celebration is held at the Kargil War Memorial in Dras, Ladakh, where leaders, veterans, and citizens gather to pay tribute.

• Wreath-laying ceremonies, candlelight marches, and patriotic programs are organized across India, especially in schools, colleges, and military institutions.

• Prime Minister, Defence Minister, and Chief of Defence Staff often address the nation or participate in memorial events.
